How many of you recognize this image? The TV Guide crossword puzzle. Talk about fun and frustrating at the same time.
Every week when I was younger, it was the first thing to grab out of the Sunday newspaper. It’s the reason why I became a huge crossword puzzle junkie, eventually working my way to doing the New York Times crossword weekly. And it’s yet another hobby I owe to my grandmother, Ninny.
She started doing crosswords when she retired, around the age of 70. A doctor told her crosswords were good to keep the mind sharp. I chuckled at first, thinking how silly it was doing crosswords focused solely on television, movies and acting. Too easy, right? Haha, not! But it became an endearing part of her that bonded us together.
Every time I would stop in for a visit, there was the TV Guide open to the crossword page, most of it filled in. Before I could finish hugging and kissing her hello, she would grab it and her pencil and start asking me for help with the clues that stumped her. Even while at college, she would call just to ask me for help with a clue. Back then we didn’t have cell phones, if I missed her call, she would leave me a message on the answering machine. Something like “What’s a three letter word, starts with a C, before the word Miami?” I’d call her back right away, “CSI, of course!”
From there, it didn’t take long for me to become a crossword fan and for me to be the one calling asking for HER help, especially when it came to clues involving TV shows like Gunsmoke, Honeymooners or the Merv Griffin Show. What I wouldn’t give to be able to sit with her and do one more crossword puzzle together again. That doctor was right! It kept her mind razor sharp and at the same time gave a grandmother and granddaughter one more special thing to share together.
