Growing up in South Florida, summertime has always been much more about the relaxed pace than the sunny weather. My family is lucky to live walking distance to the beach so we get to enjoy the warmth of the sun and the cool breeze of the ocean all year around.
Yet, when summer comes along, I find that everything just becomes a little easier. We have more last minute unplanned BBQ’s with family and friends where everyone ends up in the pool. Mornings begin with bike rides along A1A and days tend to end with sunset walks on the beach looking for shells and sea glass. Packing up the car for a last minute trip to my younger brother’s home in the Florida Keys just seems easier to do.
Please enjoy some of my favorite summertime memories.
We kicked off summer with a trip with my older brother’s family to Captiva Island on the West Coast of Florida. Here I am with Olive and her cousins enjoying some pool time.
My brother Rob with his youngest daughter Sloan.
Olive and her cousin Samantha celebrated their birthdays while in Captiva. Let’s just say the little party was in the resorts candy shop…..talk about sugar overload.
Olive and I made her first fairy garden this summer. We spent the weekend going to all the thrift stores and found lots of tiny treasures to create her little fairy garden. As you can see, she likes to visit it first thing every morning.
Almost once a week Olive and I would walk to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center where they rehabilitate Sea Turtles and have amazing outside salt water tanks where you can get up close to all kinds of marine life. We normally pack a little lunch and sit by the tank and watch the turtles swim by.
When we don’t go to the nature center, most days we end up walking over to the beach, or should I say, I walk over and little Miss Olive enjoys her red wagon.
I grew up with my Dad taking all 5 of us kids to the beach. Those are still some of my favorite memories. Now I get to enjoy making them with my daughter.
Of course we still have our typical summer afternoon thunderstorms, which was the perfect excuse to go see a movie.
We are blessed with good health, but we did run into a few colds this summer. Olive woke up in the middle of the night at the beginning of the summer with Croup. That scared the heck out of us and then at the end of the summer (pictured here), she got a little stomach bug. Overall, I’m extremely grateful for a healthy summer.
This summer Olive got her first playhouse. As you can see she was a great project manager for James.
Although the tans may fade, the summertime memories live on forever.
Thanks for joining me for one last visit down memory lane. I hope you had a wonderful summer with your family and friends. What did you get up to?
