Thank you for all of your encouragement and kind words about my artwork.  I am continuing to branch out and trying new techniques.  I still have not been able to find an art class that works with my crazy schedule so; I am using YouTube video’s to learn from other artists.  I am blown away by how many talented artists are willing to showcase and share their techniques.  It has helped me soooo much.  I recently watched a video on palette knife painting and thought I would give it a try.

This is from a picture of my sister that I have used before.  I start with a basic drawing then start layering the different levels of shadows and highlights.  The majority of the painting was done with the palette knife but I did use a brush for some of the detail on the eyes, nose and teeth.  Although they are not perfect images of Cathy, I am happy with how they turned out.

This is my first attempt at a full figure and pose.  I use a soft pastel pencil to sketch my drawings on the canvas.  They erase easily and the lines are easily covered with the paint.

Working with skin tones is challenging.  I learned that I need to mix a lot of paint.  I ran out of some of the tones I mixed and it is not easy trying to get the exact color.  Lesson learned.

As you can tell I like to play with color in unusual ways.  This is my Uncle Lee.  The photo I used was in black & white.   I wanted the emphasis to be on his face and I wanted his eyes to stand out.

These are the largest canvas’ I have ever worked on.  I stared at the big white blank canvases for a while before I could get up the nerve to start working on them.  Believe me when I say, I used a whole eraser just trying to get the drawings the way I wanted them.  But I overcame my fear and can’t wait to start another!
