Renew, Revive & Repurpose

by on ‎07-29-2015 01:13 PM

We’ve been holding onto the antique desk that belonged to my grandparents for years hoping to find a good home for it. We used it in our living room until about three years ago when we converted our formal living room into a pool room.  It no longer fit in the room.

As you may know, Lauren just purchased her own home…we’re so proud.  I offered the desk to her and while she was thrilled, she felt it was not quite her style.IMG_5691.JPG

I suggested we refinish it to bring it back to life.  She was more than willing, especially after looking at the price of new, similar items.

Some people would be offended to know that we painted the desk and added some distressing to the finish. I feel that my grandparents, who worked very hard their entire lives to make a wonderful home, would have loved that their desk has been passed down to another generation in our family.

When we move the desk to the garage for painting we discovered some little treasures inside—several coins, an old lottery ticket, and a receipt with my grandfather’s signature on it. It was really cool. We cleaned it, sanded, painted, sanded, and painted again.

After it dried we rubbed a black stain in places to give it a worn look and we reused the original brass hardware.  I saw a DIY show that suggested dropping the brass hardware into boiling water then giving it a good scrubbing to bring back the finish. It worked!IMG_5694.JPG

A little elbow grease and a few days of work has given the desk a new lease on life and given Lauren the confidence to try some other DIY projects in her home.  One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  It’s now proudly displayed in Lauren's family room with some decorative items that I picked up from the Q. IMG_5696.JPG

What DIY projects have you done in your home?
