Honored to Call Her Mom

You know Mother’s Day is one of those funny holidays because honestly, I think every day is Mother’s Day. See, I’m still crazy close to my mom. I talk to her pretty much every week, and we still end every phone call with “I love you.” So, the challenge on Mother’s Day is “how do I tell her on this particular day, in a different way, how much I love and appreciate her?”

When I was little, I would make something to give her… a hand drawn picture, a hook rug, or a piece of pottery that I made in class. As I got older, my brother, sister and I would make her breakfast in bed, and crown her “queen for a day,” and respond to any request. As a teenager I would proudly give her something that I bought with my own money.

These days, I usually celebrate Mother’s Day with a phone call and a card or a gift. My Mother’s Day gifts are usually something that speaks to who she is (a Buddhist), what she values (helping other people… like the Faithful Fools Street Ministry), or how she cares for herself (by writing plays, swimming, taking walks).  Or sometimes it’s just something that makes me smile, and I think will make her smile.

It’s funny that we call it Mother’s Day because ultimately, it’s just one more opportunity for me to thank my lucky stars and to tell her that I’m grateful that she’s here, that I’m so happy to hear her voice, and that I am forever enriched because she continues to bless my life in extraordinary ways. Bottom line, I’m honored to call her “mom.”
