Grandma’s Shells and Peas

My grandma, who is 90 years old, has been an amazing cook as long as I can remember. I think she discovered her talent as a home cook after marrying an Italian man who loved big Italian dinners. Lucky for me, this meant all kinds of wonderful, memorable dishes from my childhood.

Tonight I was talking to my mom and she was making one of the more simple dishes called ‘Shells and Peas’ for my niece, her granddaughter. It inspired me to make it for myself and I thought I would pass it along to you. This recipe is definitely the simplified version of how Grandma would make it, but it’s perfect for something quick and easy.

First boil water and cook your pasta shells to your liking (I like to use the smaller size shells)

Next sauté one chopped onion and a couple diced garlic cloves

(Here Grandma would heat up her homemade tomato sauce – I used store bought).

Heat up the tomato sauce and a can of sweet peas together in a small saucepan.

Strain the water from the shells.

Pour sauce and peas over the pasta and stir

Fold in the sautéed onion and garlic

Enjoy!

Store the leftovers in a Lock & Lock and enjoy tomorrow once the flavors have really

come together.

I hope you like this simple recipe. As a child, I remember how fun it was to find the peas hidden in the shells. I hope you find it just as magical...and tasty.

Best,

Elise
