Embrace Your Curls

I have to tell you it has been so freeing to go back to my natural curls!!  I felt like I was doing constant damage to my hair with all the blowouts and flat irons, etc.  I was only going to try to go with my naturally curly hair for the summer - because - as all you curly girls know - the heat and humidity of the summer are not our friends!  But, I have received such an outpouring of support and kind compliments about my new look, that I might just stick with it for a while!

So many of you have asked exactly what my "curl recipe" is and what products I have bee using that I decided to write it all down in a quick blog.

Here's what I do:

After I have thoroughly cleansed my hair, and before I get out of the shower, I apply a little bit more of the WEN cleansing conditioner as my leave-in conditioner. I then take a wide tooth comb and comb it all the way through to make sure it gets evenly distributed. I only apply the conditioner from about the crown through the roots. Sometimes I then take whatever is left over on my fingers and run it over the top of my head and around my hairline when I get frizzies.

I then do the same thing with styling cream.

Finally, I do this same procedure once more using this mousse.  The only difference is that I put the mousse from my hairline all the way through to the end. I then twist the hair in a knot and clip it with a large claw clip and get out of the shower without putting a towel on it. I find that the towels make it frizzy. If you need something – use a pillowcase or an old T-shirt to wrap around your head.

Once out of the shower, I bend my head over and massage my scalp with my fingers to break the curls up a bit. From there, I take long butterfly clips around my hairline to separate and define some of the curls.  I leave them in while I am trying to add some lift and height at the crown.

Depending upon how much time I have that day – or how much I have to do for the Littles that morning – I either start immediately defusing the hair or I let it air dry for a while.  For my curls, it's better to let them air dry for a bit before I start the diffusing process.

Once I do start diffusing, I put the dryer on high heat but a low setting. Once the curls have pretty much formed and I'm ready to set them, I use a cool burst to keep them in place. The biggest hurdle is not overblowing the curls. You don't want to disrupt the curl pattern. If any hair starts to get a bit frizzy, I use a bit more mousse.

I finish the whole thing up with glossing serum to even out any rough spots and to add a bit of shine. If I do this properly, I can actually pin my hair up at night and wear the same curls for 2 to 3 days! Now that's a definite timesaver.

I hope these tips help. We curly girls have to stick together – so if you have any other tips I would certainly love for you to share them here!

XO,

Albany
