Bring Some Homespun Charm to Your Holiday Table...Every Single Year!

Hi, everyone!

You all know how much I love setting the dinner table for a special occasion or holiday…I’ve done tablescapes for the summertime, Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring brunches, game days, and more…too many to count. But food is at the heart of all of my get-togethers and I think there’s no better place to decorate and show off your creativity than on the table itself.

As you also know, I’m a big fan of using everyday items to bring a theme to life. A floral centerpiece is beautiful, but expensive. Instead, find that old glass hurricane you’ve had for years and fill it with branches and autumn leaves. It will look even better…and cost you nothing except a trip outside. The same idea goes for place settings. Sure, you could buy beautiful ceramic figurines or solid pewter napkin rings. Or, you could make your own napkin and silverware holders from supplies from craft supplies you have on hand…and use them year after year.

Holiday Utensil Holders.jpg

We made two versions…one for Thanksgiving; the other for Christmas or Hanukkah. Although, you can certainly use the Thanksgiving holder for both holidays. Here's what you need to make these:

Materials:

  • Felt
  • Ribbon
  • Buttons
  • Felt glue
  • Glue gun
  • Sharp scissors
  • Sewing machine

Directions:

  1. Determine how many holders you want to make. Then, cut out two 5” x 6” felt squares per each utensil holder.
  2. Cut strips of ribbon to fit horizontally and vertically. You need two strips for the front of each holder.
  3. Cut three 4” pieces of ribbon (for each holder) to make the bow.
  4. Arrange the larger pieces of ribbon horizontally and vertically and glue them to the felt; dry for 2-3 hours.
  5. Meanwhile, fold the ends of each 4” piece of ribbon into a loop and hot glue together.
  6. Overlap all three loops form a bow, gluing each loop to the next.
  7. Glue each button in the center of the bow.
  8. Sew the two pieces of felt together.
  9. Glue each bow where the ribbon intersects on the felt.

Have fun with this—especially the part when guests ask where you bought these. Smiley Happy
