For this blog post, I have turned the reins over to our intern, Diane. Among other things, Diane works with the InsideQ team to procure the products you see in the magazine. She comes to us as a Liberal Studies major, graduating in December, and is having a great time working with us at the Q. Take it away, Diane!
I’ll be honest: when I was asked to write a blog about Dennis Basso’s new fragrance, I was a little nervous, and not only because I would be interviewing a fashion mogul. How do you write about a scent? Isn’t there only so much you can say? Am I about to write the most boring post ever?
Oh, how wrong I was.
Dennis Basso is, admittedly, completely hands-on when it comes to his products. Whether it’s bridal gowns, couture runway looks, or the pieces sold here at QVC, Dennis doesn’t just lend his name – he lends his vision. “It has to speak to me in the end,” he stated, adding that the new Dennis Basso fragrance Dennis Basso Eau de Parfum (A230856)* (which “has been a long time coming”) completes the Dennis Basso woman.
And who exactly is she? Dennis painted a picture for me: “The Dennis Basso woman, no matter her age or socioeconomic status, is always a woman. She wears lipstick, she wears earrings, she wears fragrance. She is always beautifully accessorized and pulled together. That’s what this scent is – the final accessory.”
Wearable from day-to-night, this “subtle, floral, sultry – but not too sweet” fragrance contains notes of citrus, lemon, Italian bergamotgreen apple, Italian bergamot, orange blossom, luxurious jasmine sambac, and intoxicating French tuberoseorange, jasmine, sambac, and French tuberose. Phew! You still with me? Good, because we’re about to get to the very best part: the bottle.
“I wanted this to be dressing-table worthy,” he proclaimed, in that inimitable Basso voice that has allured so many to his previous designs. “I wanted it to be chic, beautiful. To have a little weight. And I had to incorporate a little of what I’m known for with a faux fur band around the bottle that’s mimicked on the box.” Topped off with a large, faceted, emerald-cut stopper and a silver “Dennis Basso” plaque, the packaging epitomizes classic Dennis Basso luxury.
So my last question may be yours as well: why now? After 20 years at QVC and 30 years in the industry, it “just felt right. The Dennis Basso woman wanted it; she was ready.” He was in no rush to create something commercialized, like so many celebrity fragrances on the market. Dennis envisioned something clearly special that his customer would fall in love with and use as her signature scent. “I want someone to wear me,” he said, almost ironically, as he has made a name for himself by having women wear him over the years. After 6 months of design and manufacturing, Dennis is ecstatic with the final product. “I am thrilled,” he beamed. And I think you will be, too.
