Past few years I been using mainly low cone or no cone shampoos/conditioners. I heard silicones are good for preserving color. I recently purposely used a high cone shampoo to see what it was like and my hair came out better than ever and since I rotate shampoos a lot I have not had any buildup issues. If anything my hair is softer and noticeably thicker when I use a shampoo and conditioner with cones high in the ingredient list. I read that most cones are water soluble and wash out easily anyways?
