This isn't actually a "beauty" tip....... But my mom taught me and my sister I that after getting ready you should stand in front of a full length mirror and look at yourself from head to toe. Be sure to turn around and look at the back of yourself too. Check for bumps and lumps in your clothes, etc. such a great tip. Sometimes I look at women and wonder "Did you look in a mirror today?" Thanks mom for the good advice. I miss you. ❤️

I once read that you should stand in front of a mirror before you go out the door, and if anything stands out, take it off.

I still remember something Tova said. Ladies, before you put anything on your face, tap, tap, tap! Meaning, between your fingers-break it down and it will begin working on your face immediately.

Best advice was to avoid the sun as much as possible even though a tan looks "healthy." Also never wear too much makeup ....try and look as natural as possible no matter how much work you put into wearing it.

Other good advice is to never go two shades darker or lighter from your natural hair color. If you do it will always look phony.

From my beloved Mom, she advised to always wash your face and apply moisturizer before going to bed.  And put on sunblock before going outside.

Re: What's the best "beauty" tip/advice you've ever gotten?

I don't know if this is exactly beauty advice, but in a way I believe it is.  Anything that will influence the way you feel about yourself, I believe will also influece the way you look.  When I was very young, I was very skinny, very pale, unhealthy and not attractive at all.  I had a realization that I was not pretty or even cute when I was a child --- 8, 9, 10, etc.  Pictures of me as a baby and a toddler, I was very cute I have to say, and others said I was, too.

But as got to be school age, my features changed.  I was very shy, and not outgoing at all and I believe a big part of it was because of my looks -- or lack thereof.  My mother did not sugarcoat it -- though at times I wish she would have --- by telling me how pretty I was or any of that.  She simply told me that she loved me for me, that God made me just the way I was and that he didn't make any mistakes.  She told me that I should never compare myself to anyone else.  She said that everyone had something different to offer to the world.  Maybe one person had prettier eyes, while someone else has a kinder smile.  She also said that no matter how pretty or smart someone was, there was always going to be someone prettier or smarter.  But the thing that I remembered and made the most difference to me was when she said that I would be a late bloomer.  She said so many of the girls that I envied or admired, they would bloom early and fade and that I had my "bloom" to look forward to later.  She said that I would be like the beautiful swan on the lake.  I already had the long neck and long limbs!  She was right!  I was a late bloomer.  Not that I turned into a beauty queen or anything, but thankfully I did get through all my ugly stages and did just fine!!!  Oh, and another thing she said --- you can't ever have the notion that you're better than anyone else (or prettier) but you can and should have the notion that you're just as good as anyone else!!!

Re: What's the best "beauty" tip/advice you've ever gotten?

Stop buying beauty products you can make at home, and stop making things so complicated.

I make my own scrubs.  I use coconut oil to remove my makeup.  I make my own face powder, and I like it better than the store-bought one that I bought 4 containers of on eBay after it was discontinued (I like that powder a lot...but mine is better).  I make a hair gel that has a light hold to it.  And all of these things are made with food-grade and [mostly] organic ingredients.

I'm still trying out recipes for other items, and I suspect that there are some products I may not be able to replace with homemade versions, but it is so much less expensive in the long run to do things this way.  I also don't have to worry about questionable chemicals in the items I make.

The temptation will always be there to buy unnecessary beauty items from the store, but I think it was--and always will be--great advice to make my own simple and pure beauty products.

Re: What's the best "beauty" tip/advice you've ever gotten?

Well its advice I haven't gotten but what I over heard. I was about 9 years old at one of our big annual Christmas parties we'd have with all of our relatives. I was just sitting in when my Aunts were all gabbing. My one Aunt, who I always thought was so pretty, admitted how she lotioned her body daily. Always. Her skin was remarkably soft. Right then and there, at 9 years of age, I began to lotion my body daily. My Mom would buy me Jergens and I loved it! Still do! Heart And, yes, my skin continues to be very soft. Woman Happy

When I was a 21 year old wife and mother of a 10 month old baby, my husband and I didn't have 2 dimes to rub together.  One afternoon, an Avon lady rang my doorbell; I invited her in.  She showed me their newest catalog, I perused it with oohs and ahs, but  apologized for keeping her and told her I didn't have a cent to spend on anything outside of our strict budget.

She asked me what I used to clean my face, I told her Ivory soap. She asked me what I used to moisturize my face.  I was getting impatient by then and told her again that I could not afford a thing and moisturized my face with any kind of lotion I had around the house; then, baby lotion.  I started walking to the door.  She stopped, opened her huge makeup bag and pulled out a bottle of cleanser, a bottle of moisturizer and a jar of eye cream.  She told me they were a good match for my skin type and gave me a quick tutorial.  I said, "I'm going to have to ask you to leave ma'am, I don't have any money!"

She said these 3 products were her gift to me; I only had to promise to use them faithfully.  If I did and saw a difference in my skin, she would come by in 3-4 months and sell me the items at 75% off.  She figured out how much money I would need to squirrel away each week to buy them at 75% off.  I thanked her and she left, promising she would not 'bother" me for the next few months.

I left the products on the table and went about my daily tasks.  That night, near bedtime, I picked up the products and thought, "what the heck" and began using them.  Within 3 weeks, I could tell a huge dfference in my skin!!  I finally told my husband about her visit and the deal she offered me.  He said we could start a change jar and see how much money we could come up with in the next couple of months.

When she rang my bell about 3-1/2 months later, I welcomed her in with open arms. She told me she could see a difference especially in the brightness of my skin.  She offered me her "deal", I happily gave her my "change" and she gave me a bag with the same three items and said she had to go.  When I looked in the bag, I found two tiny white tubes of lipstick too.  The same exchange occurred between us for the next 18 months and we became friends.

My husband received a promotion which also involved a transfer.  I was sad to leave our city and very sad to move away from my Avon lady turned friend, Madeline.

I immediately found a new Avon lady in my new city and continue with the same regimen Madeline had started me on.  This time, with my husband's promotion, I proudly paid full price!

A few years later, we returned to visit some friends in our "old" city. I thought about Madeline and looked her up in the phone.book.  Her daughter answered the phone and in the course of our "chat", she mentioned her Mother had passed away quite  suddenly from a very aggressive type of pancreatic cancer.  She died about 6 months before my call.

What a long story!  I felt the need to share Madeline's grace and goodness.  My best beauty tips from her were.

1. it's never too early to begin good skin care.

2. cleanse, moisturize and use eye cream EVERYDAY and

MOST IMPORTANTLY, to always reach out when you see the chance.  It is better to give than to receive, you will always have a smile and every woman looks beautiful when she smiles.

Thanks for taking the time to share your story. I enjoyed reading it very much.

@sidsmom

Well, I use these ingredients: arrowroot powder, bentonite clay powder, beet root powder and cocoa powder (plain, unsweetened cocoa powder, of course).

For my skin tone, I use 15 parts arrowroot powder, 2 parts bentonite clay powder, 1 part beet root powder and 2 parts cocoa powder...but you can use whatever proportions make the right tone for you.

Some people also add turmeric powder, but I found that it gave me yellow streaks after several hours of wear, and decided to leave it out.  It's much better (for me) without the turmeric.  I'm told adding turmeric works fine as long as it is finely-milled and you mix it in with the other ingredients well enough, but I don't really need it.

1/8 teaspoon = 1 part  whenever I make mine.

With so few ingredients, it's easy to figure out what color you need to add if the color doesn't look right.

Next time I think I'm going to add kaolin clay powder and use less arrowroot powder to see if I can give the powder a little coverage.  As it is, it's a good setting powder, but I'd like to see if I can tweak it and make it more opaque.  (I didn't have the kaolin clay when I last made the powder, or else I probably would've added some then.)

Of course, I have to credit my source...Colorful Canary.  She has a website and a YouTube channel where she posts healthy beauty and food recipes, among other things.
