Thinning hair not due to thyroid. Help!

Over the last month my fine, chin length hair has been thinning quite noticeably. I can see my scalp through my hair. I do take Synthroid as I had my thyroid removed five years ago. Last week I had my blood tested and it is ok. So now what do I do? I have a degenerative disease and have been on the same meds and amounts for years. No new hair products, color, style, or new household products. I ordered Andrew Lessman's Skin, Hair and Nail vitamins from another channel. I have increased my Biotin intake to 7,500 mcg daily. Has anyone tried a supplement that has helped? I searched the net and wowzer there is a ton of products. I am 54 years old and post menopausal. I do not want to be bald. Thank-you for your help.

What ever you do, DO NOT USE WEN!!!! That's what caused my hair to fall out!! I take Biotin 5000 mcg, Flax Seed oil tablets and I QUIT using the WEN junk and now my hair is growing in and it looks SOOO much better!!!!

my hair loss is stress related.

Re: Thinning hair not due to thyroid. Help!

If your endocrinologist is treating your numbers and not you, you may still have too much or too little thyroid in your system. I do think Nioxin helps some, and I also know that there are certain hairstyles that cannot work for me and some that can work better. Thyroid patients CANNOT be passive in their ongoing treatment, and there is a HUGE difference, at least for me, between being at "normal" thyroid functioning and at "optimum" thyroid functioning. Changes in hair and/or skin texture occur when thyroid hormone is less than optimal, not when you're experiencing major physical damage. Please be sure that you and your doctor are working as a team!

Violann, you are so right. My TSH was only 0.543. The normal range is something like0.4-4.0. My previous level two months ago was 1.367. I have had a significant drop, but still within the "normal" range. My doctor will not increase my Synthroid, as it is at 175 mcg. daily.i have made an appointment with her to straighten this out. Her office sends lab reports through the mail, unless they consider it abnormal and then she calls. I received a letter. Again, I want to thank everyone who responded. You have been very kind and most helpful. Significant hair loss is so distressing. I may cut my hair very short into a style that I can allow to air dry and style with my fingers. I also plan to wear big earrings to distract the eye! Best wishes to all of you for a healthy and happy 2014.

I know you said you had your blood tested - but, only your thyroid? For me it was anemia! My doc ran every test EXCEPT a hemoglobin! Finally, the nurse practitioner had that test run. It was so low I had 3 transfusions. Within months my hair came back. (even curlier)

I had tried biotin supplements, and Nioxin hair system. Nothing helped. That's when I made an appt. with the N.P. and she found the cause.

Best of luck to you.

The same thing happened to me !

I use the 3 step Ovation products too and it's helped a lot. No more hair is falling out and I have some regrowth in the front. I use Toppik to fill in the part in the back that is still thin. I've tried other products for thinning hair such as Avalon Organics shampoo and conditioner and it didn't help at all. I hope you find a product that helps you.

There are dermatologists who specialize in hair loss. Could your primary care doctor look carefully for one of these sub-specialists and refer you? That would probably be the best starting point.

I have had alopecia areata three times, once kind of badly (although not completely bald). Though my hair grew back within three months each time, I decided that if it didn't I would get a really nice wig or hairpiece and wear it.

See whether you can get an expert opinion and press your doctor for solutions. If your hair stays thin, look for the many cosmetic options to make you happier.

Yes, I'd do this. Thyroid issues aren't the only things that cause hair loss. Even stress can cause it, and if you're stressed out over some hair loss, you can exacerbate the issue and find yourself in a circle of stress and hair loss. Look for a specialist and get his or her advice. My friend's 12 year old daughter has alopecia and has to take medication for it, but it's worked well and her hair has grown back.
