OTC haircolor brands

I have to color my roots every 3 weeks, and I just can't afford to go to the salon anymore. I've been to Ulta and Aveda but it cost $60 every time I go. So now I'm doing it myself but I need some good OTC brands which cover the grays. Are there any brands less damaging than others? I did google it but there are so many opinions and they all differ, except one. It seems that Loreal excellence is liked by a lot of people, but before I buy it I'd like to know what you're thinking and recommend.
