Re: Has anyone had a dental implant....I am going to a dentist for a consult for one...

I live in California and most dentist don't do implants. They can make the teeth that go on the implant, but a special Doctor does the surgery. It runs about 3500 a tooth or so. They remove the tooth, and put the skr ew thing in to the jawbone that day. You are sedated with vertex or something. They let that heal for a few months (depends on your healing) then the tooth is put in.

If you have damaged bone, then they do the cadaver bone transplant. If you have that, you have to wait until the cadaver bone adheres to the bone. Usually if you have to have this done, it is because you have lost (or are loosing teeth) due to disease, and the bone around your tooth is bad.

I have reabsorption in a tooth in the back. My old dentist put a crown over it, not detecting it when it was small. My new dentist sent me to this periodontist who does implants and nothing else. He said I could do it now or wait. Eventually the tooth will just fall out. Deep sigh here. I have some knee and spine issues , so I have to wait.

This is not necessarily true. In my husband's case, they added extra bone for precautionary measures and to give it more support. Some people natural have less bone.

Honestly it should be a periodontist that does the implant surgery and yes, a regular dentist can then make the new tooth. I would be leery about a regular dentist doing implant surgery. I am not even sure they are qualified to do that type of surgery.

I'm having a stroke reading this. I dream of someday doing this, but the price is outrageous. Nothing like having your own teeth! Is it cheaper to get them in the back of your mouth? Are front teeth more expensive? Tia.

Not everyone needs bone grafts and not everyone needs sinus lifts. Also, 8 implants is alot and most don't need a bridge in addition to implants (my husband did implants to get RID of his bridge so I am a little confused about implants and a bridge). So that type of price is due to all the extra things her husband had to have done, which is not typical for most people.

Re: Has anyone had a dental implant....I am going to a dentist for a consult for one...

thanks again for all your replies. I see the Dentist for a consult tomorrow...he only does these transplants. My regular dentist says I will wear a flipper or flapper lol when the tooth is removed until I get the final tooth. that sounds uncomfortable but can't walk around without a front tooth for months.

How often do you need to see the transplant dentist while it's healing.

thanks again Lucky

You were given a great price. Both my husband and I are in the process of having our second implant. Each one was $5000, not including the new crown*. Ours were bottom teeth so there was no sinus lift involved.

My first was spread out over 9 months. Presently I am 3 months into the process and am scheduled to be re-evaluated in December. Hopefully I will have the implant in January.

*A short time ago I had a call from our dentist's office about scheduling an appointment for my husband's crown on the first implant. Our insurance only paid the oral surgeon for the extraction of the tooth. We've paid slightly less than $5000 to the oral surgeon. Our dentist did a pre-certification for the crown. Initially it was rejected because they said they paid for the extraction of the tooth so there was no need to place a crown. They appealed and today I learned they will pay $540 of the $2300.

Next we have mine, then my husband's second implant.

From start to finish each tooth is $7000+{#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

I have on implant that my former dentist put in. In addition to regular dentistry, he was also a specialist in the field of restorative and cosmetic dentistry. He said that he always uses bone grafting.

The worst part was the removal of my bad tooth -- an upper molar. But the rest of the procedure was a breeze and well worth the money.

See if there is a local hospital with a dental unit you will get excellent care at a fraction of the price.

I am having total mouth reconstruction 4 implants on top and two on the bottom which will anchor removable brides, right now I have denture like plates which are more than annoying but I know the end result will be amazing and so worth it

Re: Has anyone had a dental implant....I am going to a dentist for a consult for one...

I just went thru the same thing. After consulting with a cosmetic dentist, i opted for a perm bridge instead of the implant. I now have a bridge and one veneer for my front 4 teeth. For the first time in my life i now have 4 straight teeth in front and they are very pretty. He said having one implant in front wouldn't have looked as good. The implants are very dense so no light shows thru them. Having a bridge with one veneer makes them all look alike. For years i had a crown on the front tooth and it never matched the other teeth in front. I'm really happy with the results.

I hope you have good results with your choice as well!

Re: Has anyone had a dental implant....I am going to a dentist for a consult for one...

I have had one dental implant done but I won't do it again. I had to have cadaver bone put in my gums because my natural bone had worn away. Had to wait 3 months for that to heal, the. The post was put in. Another 3 months before the final crown. Unless it's a tooth in the front I wouldn't do it.
