Alright, ladies.  Today, I am cutting back on sugar.  I have decided to try and cut way back on the junk food during the week and only indulge in weekends to an extent.  This is harder than it sounds for me.

Goal -ComPact sugar.

It's hard because there's so much sugar in everything we buy.  I'm always looking for a reliable yogurt and I'm always mortified when I read the labels.  I have seen sugar, honey and maple syrup ALL in one cup of yogurt.  Why is this?  It's sickening sweet.  You're telling me that honey isn't enough -- you have to have sugar and syrup in there, too?

Utterly bizarre.  Yogurt is one thing: Milk gone bad.  You want the bacteria, not all the additives to make it taste like ice cream.  The fruit they add is sugary jam.  Ugh!

This week I had a limited batch of yogurt with blood orange.  Should be good, right?  How can you screw that up?  Easy.  Put chunks of orange peel in the yogurt.

It's just wrong.

Now that she's going to be re-training on a leash, maybe coming when called will eventually return.

aprilskies,

she is a cutie. In fact, she's gorgeous. I think that may have gone to her head. As for her keeping me young, it's funny you should mention that. Before we got her, I kept saying I was too old for another dog. Everyone kept telling me that wasn't true, a puppy would keep me young. I was right.

You're crazy about her, aren't you?  She's a living, breathing teddy bear.  She'll slow down in time and before you know it she'll be perfect.  That period of perfection is so short.  It's just not fair.

Well, I can quote again but still can't edit anything.

@just bee, she's one lucky dog. We had a lousy walk this morning--we happened to meet her sister and our beast went berserk wanting to play while her sister sat calmly and totally obedient making me look like a fool. So before we headed to the pound, I just happened to stop and read your post. It made me cry and I put down the car keys. You are right. All of my past dogs have become saints now that they're gone (and I've forgotten they could be pains too) and I expected her to be the same in six short months. She really is the sweetest thing. Which is the only reason the old geezer hasn't already driven her to the pound himself months ago.

You are also right about the yogurt. It's all sugar of some sort. And according to some probiotic specialists, when the fruit (sugar) is already added to the yogurt, the sugar eats the good bacteria that you are eating the yogurt for. (Nobody eats yogurt because they like the taste.). I made the mistake of getting some Tillamook yogurt with fruit because I saw some lady in the checkout line with some and she said it was good. She was right, unfortunately. Now my frig is full of it and I don't want to eat the plain stuff.

@aprilskiesis right, I'm afraid to say. I've also got to get myself back on track with a healthy diet. I've been giving myself excuse after excuse to eat all the cr*p I shouldn't even be looking at in the grocery store. Sugar and fat are my downfalls. When I cut out sugar, I make up for it with fat. My problem is that if I eat like I should for a while, I start feeling so much better that I think I can handle "just a little" of the stuff I need to stay away from. "Just a little" never is "a little". So I'm with you, Aprilskies. No more junk food. No more sugar. Only good fats. Everything in moderation. I'm going to do that right after I finish all my chocolate bars, potato chips, popcorn, and ice cream.

(Just to make sure: heading to the pound was a joke.)

Yes, it is in everything.  You can't get away from it.  It all seems healthy until you read the labels. ....and the salt, it is ridiculous.

Absolutely.  I just attended an addictions seminar and fat, sugar and salt are right up there with opiates, stimulants, alcohol and shopping.  What gets me are the serving sizes.  That's not a serving -- that's a taste.  These overpriced 15.2 "healthy" cafe drinks are two 8-ounce servings according to the nutrition label.  Who drinks half?  Where is this person?

I'm not anti-fat.  The human body needs fat.  Oddly, the physician/attorney who facilitated this seminar thinks the whole cholesterol thing is a racket.  Sure, it can clog your arteries, but why fight a losing battle when it's you who's producing cholesterol?  I'm not going to pull out my liver any time soon and I'm not giving up the food that's full of cholesterol.  But reducing sugar and salt is doable.

I liked this guy.  His theory is simple: The produce section is calling to you.  "Look at us!  Look at our pretty colors!"  That's what you're supposed to eat instead of the Kettle chips and candy bars.  Those colors are designed to attract us.  It works for me.  I see green, yellow, orange and red bell peppers and it's like the Sirens are saying my name.  I will eat a ton of bell peppers.

Unfortunately, I like them with Italian sausage and bread.

The first step: Reduce the processed, packaged foods.  It's frustrating that the warehouse stores like Costco are now so full of this stuff because they're selling convenience.  Better-half and I walk out of there without food most of the time.  Okay, that's not true.  I should say that what we walk out with is food.  Meat, fruit, vegetables, cheese.  We'll stock canned beans and tomatoes, jarred artichoke hearts, tuna.

We avoid most of what's in the frozen section -- the tasty (salty) little items that they're handing out to shoppers.  If an item grows in nature and doesn't come wrapped in plastic, it's generally better for you.

This is a good time to make a change.  Warm weather's coming.  Hearty comfort food and lots of starches (all the pastas and carb-filled foods I like) are less tempting when summer comes around.  Cold, crispy foods get my attention.

You can control more than you think.  Avoid eating out.  Most of the restaurants out there aren't cooking real food: They're warming up a frozen entree.  Avoid certain aisles in the stores.  They know you're doing this -- that's why there are endcaps and giant displays strategically placed to distract you while you're trying to make your way to the produce section.

Start slowly.  There's nothing more discouraging than filling your fridge with fresh fruit and vegetables and then tossing bags of grey-green slime a week later.  And I use the term "fresh" knowing that what we're eating isn't.  How fresh is it if it has to cross borders to get to you?  My produce is grown in countries I'll never live to see.  I'm told it's cheaper to transport an apple from the other side of the world than it is to produce a locally grown apple.  I'm told a lot of things.  I'm expected to nod and shut up about it.

I'm not saying I have a problem with a fruit or veggie from another land; I'm just saying that it would be nice to have a choice.  I would like to buy something that's grown closer to home.  But depending where you live, that's next to impossible.  I live in the high desert.  We tried to support our local farm but we stopped because our local farm was supplying us with produce that wasn't local.  A nearby state is considered local.  It's not.  It's another state.

The news is filled with stories that distract us so we don't pay attention to the things that really matter.  Food is getting weird.  And it's expensive if you want to improve the quality of what you eat.

Like ComPacting, change in diet doesn't happen overnight.  Giving up salt and sugar sounds like a good idea, but tell that to your body that's screaming, "Gimme that Kettle chip!!!"  It's that crunch.  Irresistible.

So maybe what we can do is stop bringing them into the house.  But we have to make sure we have something in the kitchen that crunches when withdrawal kicks in.  That's the tricky part.
