Suggestions for travel to New Orleans

Looking for advice.  Will be going there for a short visit (extra two days) before we leave on a cruise out of New Orleans.  Having trouble finding a hotel (another question) and wondering about what to see and do.  Thanks.

You really need to put Cafe du Monde and the French Quarter at the very top of your to-do list~Heart

Re: Suggestions for travel to New Orleans

Hi Bonnie, we were there 3 years ago, and stayed at the Country Inns & Suites on Magazine Street, which was nice, but it was a six walk block to the French Quarter area (in 100 degree heat!). We said that if we came back, we would like to try the Harrah's Casino Hotel, which is located closer, and has the Riverwalk Mall nearby. But, try not to stay directly in the French Quarter, as you will get no sleep at night, from all the partying below! We took one of those city tours where you could hop on and off wherever you liked, and thought it was an excellent way to see the city. Have a great time!

Re: Suggestions for travel to New Orleans

I love New Orleans and have been there many times. We usually stay at the Monteleone on Royal St. It's a block away from Bourbon St. So you don't get the late night noise. Amazing restaurants, music, art, shopping etc. more than enough to keep you busy for a few days. Let the good times roll!

We are not fans of New Orleans but........one of our favorite hotels of all time is the Windsor Court. It is across from Harrahs is that is of interest to you.

If you like seafood got to Walkons.  Try the angels on horseback.  Shrimp around an oyster and wrapped in bacon, battered and fried.  Heaven on earth!

Was there for 5 nights in 1989. loved it. Stayed at the royal Sonesta on Bourbon St.. The Monteloeone is nice. You might like the trolley ride through the Garden District. Cafe DuMond of course. Great Cajun and Creole food everywhere. Have fun and be safe.

Re: Suggestions for travel to New Orleans

Haven't been there in a long time, but we usually stayed at the Marriott on Canal Street and loved it.  Also stayed at the Hyatt by the Super Dome, and it was fine too--back them!

To eat I'd go to Galatoires, ride the streetcar to Commander's Palace, and Bayona is good too.

For sure, show up early at Central Grocery and try to get a seat inside to eat THE genuine muffalatta (sp?)!  It is very good!  If you can't sit inside, take it out and eat by the river.

Re: Suggestions for travel to New Orleans

I've stayed at the JW Marriott on Canal St and the Mariott in Metarie.

Love the Mariott in Metarie. Room that faced Lake Pontchartrain and the causeway....OMG, the view is amazing and the service was excellent. You do need transportation to get around.

The JW is a different vibe. Walking distance to everything in the French Quarter and the trolley. Just an old school, very button down, suit and tie atmostphere.

The service and hospitality in both were amazing.
