it's a way of showing respect imo and it depends on who it is and the circumstances for me.  some will get a card, some flowers and some i go to the funeral.

 

  i remember a man i worked with years ago, his father passed away and we all went to the viewing.  it meant a lot to him.

 

it's just a case by case basis.  these days there are more and more memorial services and fewer funerals.

 I think visitation is generational. My MIL passed away on Sept 26. There will be two services for her and we expect many visitors. She was very ill and is now at peace.
