Oscar gown was returned to The London West Hollywood Friday afternoon where it was taken 2 days earlier ... and the thief called TMZ to tell us where it could be found and added it was a worthless fake.
A guy called us at around 2:30 PM Friday and said he had taken the dress from Lupita's hotel room after he noticed the door was ajar. He said he and others took 2 pearls off of the dress and took them to the garment district in downtown L.A. ... where they were told they weren't real.
The thief says he decided to take the dress back to the London in a garment bag that was inside a trash bag that he deposited in a 2nd floor bathroom adjacent to a fitness center.
We contacted the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. and gave them the info. They went over to the hotel and retrieved the bag and they found a garment bag with the dress inside.

Calvin Klein is a liar claiming they were real Akoya pearls! No wonder he lent it to the star and didn't ask for it back the same day. And how careless of her to just leave it hanging in her room with the door ""ajar""!

What kind of thief is going to report that? It's all part of the scam IMO.

That's interesting. I wonder if they have a tape of the person returning it (or taking it). They had said they were looking through tapes to try to find the person taking it.

Would it be terribly bad of me for not being too concerned about Lupita's dress?

Bizarre that a thief would call TMZ

NBC:
he white dress believed to be the same one was found abandoned under a sink in a bathroom at the London West Hollywood hotel, the same hotel where the actress had been staying when it was stolen on Wednesday, Nishida said.
The person who had returned the dress had taken it to the downtown Los Angeles garment district and found out that the pearls were fake, Nishida said.
The $150,000 dress, a white Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein gown decorated with 6,000 pearls, was a showstopper on the red carpet before Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony.
