Did you have cataract surgery?

I found out yesterday that I have cataracts in both eyes and need surgery. The way it was explained is that I would be awake and the procedure only takes five or seven minutes on each eye and done a week apart. There will be a lot of follow up and eye drops. The good news is that Medicare will pay 80%, my supplement will pay 20% plus the cost of a new pair of glasses...it couldn't get better than that.

If you had surgery I would appreciate you telling me how it went and thanks in advance for your response.

Re: Did you have cataract surgery?

Good luck......Shorty is also going to be having it done.

Yes, it is now a very easy procedure.......way different than it used to be. I had mine done in 2003, and it has changed a lot since then too.

Back when I had it done.....the cost for each eye was $3,000......and I never had to pay a penny for either eye. Excellent coverage. It is surgery, and we all know how expensive it is. Are you having it done at the outpatient section of a hospital, or at a regular outpatient location.....???

Mine will be done at an outpatient eye care facility. I found shorty2u's thread after I started mine so I read all the posts and am relieved that it is a relatively simple procedure.
Thanks for responding to my thread.

Re: Did you have cataract surgery?

Can someone please tell me what kind of eye dr I should look for? I recently moved to a different state, but when I was in NY I usually went to an Empire Vision or one of the other large chain stores. I KNOW that I need new glasses and I am pretty certain that I have (at least) the start of cataracts. When I drive without sun glasses I am having some difficulty with clear vision. I think I need a specialist, but just don't know what type of specialist. I'll thank you in advance. Smiley Happy

benz......I have only gone to an ophthalmologist all my life. Have been going to my one doctor for many years now, and his son joined him several years back. I like both of them very much. The son completed his Fellowship at Case Western Reserve Hospital in Cleveland. And from there he came home to join his dad. I also have glaucoma and they have been treating me for this for many years now, and are very up to date on all their equipment and testing. Have to go in every 3 months for a pressure check on each eye and various testings.

Our eyes are so precious, and yes, I highly recommend a specialist. Good luck.

Hope this is helpful information for you.

Re: Did you have cataract surgery?

Thank you ShowMe. Guess I will need to seek out a specialist in the Nashville area. None of us can entrust our sight to less than a specialist in his/her field. I realize this procedure is pretty common anymore, but it still worries me. Smiley Happy

Yes, it is pretty common, and easy to go through. Be sure you have all your insurance information with you, like your Medicare Card if you are on Medicare, and your supplemental coverage card. Also, they are now taking your picture for their records.

Might make a suggestion.....have someone go with you that drives......they will probably dilate your pupils. I can't drive when that is done to me, but it may not bother you if you have had it done before. Take a pair of sunglasses with you no matter.

Good luck.....and if you know someone down in the Nashville area that has a good eye doctor you can make an appointment with, sometimes the recommended doctor is a good one.

Re: Did you have cataract surgery?

Yes, both eyes about 2 months apart a few years ago. For my left eye I decided on a Multi-Focal lens(iol)and for my right eye I went with the standard Mono-Focal lens. Cost extra for the Multi lens but now I no longer need to wear glasses for anything and I had been wearing tri-focals for over 25 years.

Re: Did you have cataract surgery?

Benz, an OPHTHALMOLOGIST is a medical doctor specializing in the eyes. He is the most advanced and learned doctor to deal with eye problems. He can do surgery on the eyes and prescribe meds. He can also write a prescription for glasses. If you just have a vision problem and need a prescription for new glasses I would go to an OPTOMETRIST. If you just want to buy eye glasses, you can go to an OPTICIAN or OPTICAL STORE with your prescription.

Re: Did you have cataract surgery?

My mom had one of her eyes done and is waiting for the second cataract surgery (on her other eye) later this month.

She said it's the easiest surgery she's ever had...no pain, just some itching afterwards.
