Jen Arnold of The Little People Has Cancer

The People article didn't say what type of cancer she had other than it was rare. She is having surgery and chemo.

Bless her heart.

Jen Arnold, star of the hit TLC series The Little Couple, is battling a rare form of cancer.

The Houston-based neonatologist, 39, and her husband Bill Klein, 38, are parents toson Will, 3, whom they adopted from China, and daughter Zoey, 2, whom they recently brought home from India.

But what should have been a time of joy and celebration for the reality stars has been bittersweet, as Arnold reveals in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.

"I have recently been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer and am currently undergoing treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy.” Arnold says.

"I am very fortunate as the prognosis is good. While there is never a good time to get news like this, getting it just as we are building our new family is tough in many ways ... But being surrounded by the love of my husband and our two beautiful children is actually in many ways giving me the strength to fight it even stronger."

No further details about the type of cancer Arnold is facing are being released at this time.

Arnold and Klein have been reality stars since a TV special about their wedding, The Little Couple: Just Married, became a sensation for the network.

Since then, millions of viewers have watched Arnold and Klein, an entrepreneur who runsRocky and Maggie's Pet Shop in Houston, build their dream home, struggle with fertility and surrogacy issues, and ultimately, expand their family with the adoption of Will and Zoey.

"For a lot of people, loss tears them apart," Arnold told PEOPLE earlier this year. "In general, we are pretty tough people. I feel very lucky and fortunate to have the wonderful life I have. We are good at putting things in perspective because of our life experiences. I am not a person to give up when something is important. We feel so lucky to be parents."

Certainly, Arnold, who has had approximately 30 procedures and surgeries related to her type of dwarfism, isn't one to shy away from a fight.

"Jen has achieved so many great things," Klein told PEOPLE earlier this year. "We are so in love with each other and supportive of each other that we are going to be ok. Few people are so lucky to have what we do, from the moment you meet that one person and everything that you do together, everything that you add to that relationship is exciting as well. We are up for challenges."

OMGosh, that is terrible.

They are such an inspirational couple. How devastating for them.

Prayers for Jen's healing. I understand her type of cancer is rare and hasn't been announced at this time.

Oh no! Although rare, I hope it's totally curable. I can take or leave Bill but I really like Jen a lot and wish her nothing but the very best.

ETA: Details of the type of cancer that has been diagnosed have not been released, but the mother of two said, "I am very fortunate as the prognosis is good."

I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach when I read it. Such a new family and all.

We are off to Atlanta but maybe I can google more info on it.

Very sorry to hear this.

Being a doctor, I'm sure she calculated the risk and decided to proceed with fertility treatment, but I think a lot of women today consider fertility treatment an "option" they can utilize if they want to put off having children as long as possible.

Sure it's an option, but when you try to change or interfere with nature, there will be problems.

{#emotions_dlg.crying}..........my heart literally sank when I saw this thread. Very sad. One has to wonder if all those fertility treatments and hormones had any role in this. That would be even sadder since they ended up adopting anyway.

I wish her blessings for a full recovery.

This brought tears to my eyes. I so admire her and Bill and love the show.

Prayers to Jen and her family as she fights this battle. Someone I know locally is fighting a hard battle with cancer. She is in her 40's, and had her first child last year. Her prognosis is poor at this point, because they have not found the right combination of drugs to stop the growth of the cancer cells.

That was my first thought when I heard she had cancer - fertility treatments. Very sad.

I really enjoy seeing them grow as a couple, build a house and now a family. I am sick about this. {#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

I really like Jen, not so much Bill. I wish her a speedy recovery & hope Bill gets her some help now while she fights this. I think this show will be off the air.

I am so sorry to hear this news about Jen. I have loved to see them adopt Will and now a second baby. She has endured so many surgeries during her life. Best wishes for her recovery!!

How sad. I love them both.

I wish her the best. It's going to be a rough enough handling the cancer...let alone the two little ones too. Thank G-d, the prognosis is good.

Mine too brii, I think we need to know much more about fertility treatments and the risk of cancer...whether connected to her case or not. I think we do not know the whole story about the risks.

I agree. I strongly believe there is a connection.

This is such sad news, I wish her only the best. Surgery and chemo are not easy, especially with the two little ones.

The only bright spot in this (if you can call it a bright spot) is that they appear to be able to afford a housekeeper and nanny to help with the kids and household while Jen recuperates. I am sure Bill needs to check on the stores he has, so they can hire help while Bill is working.

I wish that cute little family the best of luck and a full recovery for Jen, she is precious!

Oh, no! I love both Jen and Bill. I am somewhat relieved to read the prognosis is "good," but I know it won't be easy. Wishing the entire family all the very best. Will is adorable, and I was looking forward to seeing Zoey, but I wouldn't want any of the Arnold family to deal with filming a new season of their show at this time.

Life is beauty full.

I just read that TLC will be filming while Jen has her treatments. I think she can be an inspiration.
