I get 80 but it's probably wrong because maybe you're supposed to double up on each set of 4's.

Explain in long form how you got 20. I never understood PEMDAS. My kids laugh at me too.

Order of operations tells you to multiply before you add or subtract

(4 x 4) + (4 x 4) + 4 - (4 x 4)= 16+16+4-16=20

(4 x 4) + (4 x 4) + 4 - (4 x 4) is 16+16+4-16.

I got 20 also. "In the absence of parentheses, etc., etc. ......."

I don't know any math rules, that's how I did it by instinct.

PEMDAS is an acronym. Since this problem doesn't have any parentheses or exponents, the first rule would apply to multiplication, so do those first:

(4x4) + (4x4) + 4 - (4x4) = 16 + 16 + 4 - 16

Then, apply the add rule:

(16 + 16 + 4) - 16 = 36 - 16

Subtract last: 36 - 16 = 20

Thank you.

Somehow my mind just cannot grasp that. I understand in theory, but then I get lost along the way.

I just showed my daughter, and she knew the answer right away. Grrrr....

My answer is 20, and I got it the same way lulu and Clover did.
