Hacker Fare

I am trying to book a flight to Richmond, VA and the best priced flights are "Hacker Fares". I have never booked that way and am just a wee bit concerned. Should I be??

i have never heard of that before.

i just go to individual websites of the airlines and go from there. generally, the most affordable rates for me are on southwest and airtran.

That old adage, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" comes to mind.

Every once in awhile when I'm doing my daily Kayak search for our upcoming multi city route . . . a hacker fare pops up on this list . . . and it is crazy more expensive than my normal searches . . . unless they are doing it as the total for four people vs. the individual that usually comes up . . . even so . . . at that my usual fare is around 1500.00 per person x 4 vs the "hacker fare" that has been around 2200.00-2500.00 . . . so unless that is for a total of 4 people it certainly is no bargain. I plan to steer clear of the hacker fares . . . I back out of the browser window pronto when they pop up. I'm not missing that ship over something too good to be true. :)

Hacker Fares sound downright illegal but they're not. Kayak recently coined the term that pops up in its airline searches along with "nonstops," "1 stop," etc., when you go airfare shopping at the online travel website.

Basically, Hacker Fares allow you to book two one-way flights with separate airlines and separate tickets. (Don't confuse this with code sharing, which involves flying on different airlines through inter-airline agreements.)

Love thy neighbor means no exceptions.

hmmm thanks for the additional info. next time it pops up, I'll look further to see IF that is per person or my x 4 search amount. otherwise, it certainly wouldn't be a bargain. we have to buy soon, I've been playing the waiting game. usually tues or wed, mostly wed, lowest prices show up . . . but right now they are all HIGH. we live within 100 miles of two additional major airports so I check three on our end and play with the dates on the departure and return dates. hopefully by next week. we'll pull the trigger and buy. I hate the wait and play games with airfares.

OK it popped up on my daily search this a.m. and it is per person. So instead of the lower 2 stop routes to & from @ 1520.00 per person . . . . Hacker Fare . . . 3595.00 with 14379.00 total. How stupid is that? Who in their right mind would buy a hacker fare that far above prices of a normal multi-city fare? Dumb. Or at least with my dates and destinations, maybe for continental USA flights there might be some savings . . . somewhere . . . otherwise actually downright stupid. About as dumb as the TSA allowing knives, baseball bats & golf clubs while searching 4 yr. old disabled girls in wheelchairs.

Southwest has airfare on sale right now and they go to Richmond. Fares start at $59 one way....

I went directly to Jet Blue website and booked my flight (non stop). Price was very good, too.

I just booked a "Hacker" flight via Kayak....you can save a lot if it happens to work out that way. Just open 2 tabs for each airline with the link so the price won't change.

They should call it a "Split" fare or something, not Hacker....LOL
