MDA Telethon without Jerry Lewis

Started 1315183306.34 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1315268484.31 by humpty dumpty

I watched some of the telethon which has been on since 6 p.m. ... Celine Dionne must have taped her portion before it was known that Jerry would not be there ...

The telethon will only be on till midnite and they are asking for $1 more than they raised last year ... ya' think they will make it? ...

Who knows - folks are pretty much tapped out financially. Mr. Lewis was reported years ago that he got something like .80 out of every dollar that was donated. Not a bad job for a day or two's work. To me, it was a royal fleece and a scam. My take.

I think there are too many other worthwhile options now for one charity to get a really big haul. We've had a telethon going here in Boston for the last week for The Jimmy Fund.

Linders Back - The L.A. Times did quite an editorial on Mr. Lewis and the charity back in the 1970's. Exposed the facts. I don't think the rest of the nation was aware of the investigation though.

Wow, I had no idea that he got paid for doing the telethon. I always thought these celebrities donated their time for charity.

I thought he donated his time also.but apparently it's another business deal.

Every year I used to hold my breath afraid that Jerry Lewis would say something insulting to a performer or donator, whether in jest or not.

Glad I don't have to this year.

Just for the heck of it, I checked Snopes, and it said that he received no salary for doing the telethons.

WOW!!!

Well he didn't do it for nothing. And there is no way a person of his age has that much energy. I always wondered if he was taking something.

You can believe what you like but out here it is a well known fact - way before Snopes. He has been on the take for years.

He was addicted to painkillers for the better part of his life and has been weaned off steroids but still is nervous and jerky.... He can't sit still... He gained a ton of weight when he was on the steroids but has lost a lot since he's off them - but he still must be a holy terror to live with him.....

His wife deserves a lot of credit... I could not live with anyone with an ego like that... He never gave a reason why he decided to devote his life to MD - it's always been a "secret" but I think that is all part of the drama.... There may be no hidden reason at all - just something he decided to participate in....

I don't like him, never have. But it's a pretty serious charge that's being bandied about here. Anyone have a credible source for his being on the take?

He was a good businessman and put his talents to good use ... I hope these accusations are not true ... because if they are, it sheds a whole new light on the situation ...

Has he said why he wasn't asked to return this year? A few weeks ago when it was news that he wouldn't be back, he said he'd talk about it around this time. Anything?

I very much doubt that the 80% story is true, and I'm not a Jerry fan never cared for him.

If there was any truth to it, it would have been exposed nationally long ago.

Buh-bye Jerry. As you can tell, I'm not a fan.

It is odd, there is no mention under the controversies section in his bio.

I did not interpret Jerry's words in the same way that you did.

I think Jerry meant, that of all the money PLEDGE to be donated, 80% of it is ACTUALLY is sent in by callers.

I read that the celebrities were paid to perform...and their flight there and back...also the hotel stay and all food along with any of their quirks was provided to them...that is when I stopped donating...this was years ago...prior to that revelations...and his utter rudeness to the people donating....I would watch and gladly donate....Not only did I stop...so did my sister who was another yearly donater...

I watched a little bit of it last night around 8-9PM and they had on a comic who did some very very political jokes about Ch.eney, B.ush, Clin.ton and O. DH and I were shocked they allowed him to perform that material. He did a joke about 9/11 and Katrina -- VERY bad taste. Luckily he was only on for a few minutes. Maybe they gave him the hook? I hope so, he deserved it!

David Letterman bad mouthed the telethon this year -- something about it not including Jerry Lewis at the last minute. He said something on this Thursday night show, I think. That's what got me to tune it -- to see what it was like without Jerry.

Our local show that they threw to every now and then was embarrassingly amateur. At one point the emcee (local weatherman) could be heard telling his grandson to switch seats with another volunteer so his grandson would have a more prominent spot and could be shown on camera taking pledges. Yeah, tacky! Plus, his toupee was messed up and hair on the crown of his head was standing up like a claw.
