Shipped UPS - Delivered by Post Office

Started 1297346536.583 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1297377473.863 by blahblahvampemerblah

For the umpteenth time lately, I thought a package was going to be delivered by UPS. I was emailed the UPS tracking number, but when I went to check on delivery, there was a notice

"As requested by the sender, UPS has transferred this shipment to the local post office for delivery to the final destination."

Ugh, not again. What I do not understand about this delivery set up is - if the sender (and apparently everyone but me!) knows that the Post Office is going to be making the actual delivery to my home, why is UPS involved at all? If the Post Office makes the trip to my door to give me the item, why is it not shipped with them in the first place? It does not seem cost effective to involve two different companies to deliver an item. What is the point of shipping via UPS at the beginning but finishing up with the Post Office? Why not just use the Post Office for the entire shipment? Anyone know the logisitics or reasoning for not just shipping using the Post Office?

I talked with my UPS guy and asked him the same thing. He said that QVC and other places save money mailing it like that.

The same thing happened to me. I ordered some cute coin purses for my friends from kohls two weeks ago and they were supposed to be shipped by FEDX. They did get shipped by fedx to Sacramento and then were passed on to the USPS and I got them yesterday.

I've seen the same thing with my UPS packages from HSN, not QVC. The HSN tracking info says that an incorrect ZIP Code was provided for the Receiver, so the package had to be given to the Post Office. I've been too lazy to call HSN about this (they won't deal with it by e-mail, supposedly for security reasons).

I have a problem with that in that sometimes, not always, it costs more to send by UPS (not a lot, maybe .50-.75). If it is then delivered by USPS, then we're paying more to UPS and they aren't delivering (at least not all the way). I choose UPS so I can track. You can track USPS, but for some reason QVC doesn't seem to supply a tracking number for USPS.

It's a mystery to me but it has to be all about saving money, what else??? It's happened to me a few times lately, too, and always adds a day or two to the delivery. Not really too happy about that.

You have to choose the UPS shipping option which usually is alittle bit more but then UPS will deliver it. I think its called UPS basic or something like that where UPS takes it to the post office and then the post office delivers it. I just got a package from UPS, but I did choose the UPS option for shipping.

I don't know about other companies but if you speed order by phone or internet or don't change the delivery method from "Best Standard Delivery" you will get, for items usually shipped UPS (ie cookware) delivery using the UPS "Basic Rural" service, which has nothing to do with being rural, and everything to do with being cheap. Where I live this adds AT LEAST two days to the delivery time which is unacceptable considering the days things spend "in process".

BUT, if you order online you CAN change the delivery method fron "Best Standard" to UPS Ground and you WILL get UPS delivery to your door at the same price as "Best standard". Things that would normally be mailed all the way like jewelry or a lightweight T shirt will cost a small amount more, but you can track them.

I simply order online and always specify UPS unless the item has free shipping, in which case I just grin and bear the "Best" (not) standard delivery.

It's not a new thing. It's a service called UPS Mail Innovations where UPS starts out with the parcel and then it goes to your local post office for delivery. It's an inexpensive way to ship very light/small parcels.

FedEx has their own version called FedEx Smart Post.

The only bummer for me about when QVC does this is that they do not provide a tracking number and there actually IS a tracking number. Other retailers will give you the tracking number, which corresponds to USPS type numbers but you can still see the progress from the time UPS takes it through delivery.

This has happened to more of our orders than in the past, but I think it had to do more with the season and time of the years than anything else. I am talking amazon here, not QVC.

My wife ordered some things from amazon as a Christmas present for her mother. It went from UPS to USPS, and 3 weeks later we still had not gotten it. Needless to say Christmas was long over by then. I called amazon, they called the USPS, and they said "it was lost".

Amazon, as is the norm with their Customer Service with me, apologized and sent a re-order for free 2nd day air. Still haven't seen the original order and since it's been close to 3 months? I doubt we ever will. However amazon said should we receive it, to keep it. This was some books and a Blu-ray movie, about $65 worth of products.

And some want a gov entity to run our health care?

My brother in law works for UPS. He said that it saves the UPS driver from making a special trip by your house when the post office is already going by there anyway. Saves $$$ for UPS and the shipper.

I still don't like it...my USPS service is not nearly as good as the UPS service.

Unfortunately in my town I have to go to the post office to pick up, they do not deliver. And the window hours are terrible combined with my daily commute, so sometimes packages have to sit for close to a week. DISLIKE!

DHL, Fed Ex and Streamlite all have the same system in place, and while it can be slower with some shipments, Streamlite gets the package from California to Atlanta overnight, and then it's dropped off at mail sorting. Two to three days has been the norm lately, and that's faster than the USPS.

After receiving dozens of orders this way, it's no longer a concern of mine.

Yeah, FINALLY!!!!! Run Trey, run!
