HMS Bounty Sinking off Hatteras: Coast Guard on scene

Started 1351517937.77 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1351605410.423 by misspammie

The tall ship built for the Marlon Brando movie and used in Pirates of the Caribbean is sinking. 17 member crew has abandoned ship and is in life rafts awaiting the Coast Guard rescue team.

Helicopters are at the scened and are starting the hoisting effort to save them.

This is probably just the beginning of work for our Coast Guard. Hope everyone stays safe.

I thought it had sunk, all rescued EXCEPT for TWO that are missing. Last I heard. Via Twitter.

OMG and I'm afraid that this is just the beginning.

Wonder WHY they were out there in the 1st place....now, I'm a landlocked Dallas girl, but even I know (!) it's "Hurricane 101" to get off the water, yes??

SERIOUSLY......I agree with that. We shouldn't have to 'rescue' anybody off the water at this point. It's not exactly a 'surprise' storm. Geeeze people. A ship from a movie is nothing in the world of REAL....shame on them for not going ashore sooner.

They were trying to get the old ships out to sea,so they would not get damaged bouncing around the docks. I believe the H.M.S. Bountry is a replica of an old sailing ship.

Yes...it IS a very historical movie prop. "The ship was built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia for the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty that starred Marlon Brando. It is a replica of the British Navy's original HMS Bounty on which the famous mutiny took place in Tahiti in 1789 and is now used as a sailing school for prospective seafarers. It was built using the original ship drawings from files in the British admiralty archives, but its dimensions were enlarged by around a third to fit the enormous 70 mm cameras used in the filming. Some 400,000 feet of lumber were used, 10,000 square yards of canvas were sewn by hand and 10 miles of rope were rigged before it was ready for the silver screen."

It wasn't just a "Movie ship", it was a Tall Ship used for the training of sailors and for education purposes.

"Hurricane 101" would actually have you move ships "out to sea" rather than bring them into port as they have a better chance of riding out a storm away from docks.

Although they aren't mving the historic ships in Mystic out to sea, they are giving them slacker berths so that they will not be damaged. Small craft in the harbor near us are either being taken out of the water or moved from the docks to off shore moorings so they can bounce and move with the waves rather than fight them.

Linders Back: I didn't know that about the actual boats (moving ships further out...I learned something today!), but "Hurricane 101" was referring to the actual people on board. I would SO be looking for land....and since there was ample warning....don't know why they didn't take heed & move their staff to safer conditions.

They were quite a bit East of the track of Sandy so it looks like they were trying to avoid her. I'm sure it's a lot easier for powered vessals to change course and move faster to get out of the way than a sailing (although it didd have power option which apparently they lost) ship.

I just saw this:

The director of the HMS Bounty Organization, Tracie Simonin, said that the tall ship left Connecticut last week for St. Petersburg, Fla. She said the crew had been in constant contact with the National Hurricane Center and tried to go around the storm.

Here is the entire article: http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=news/local&id=8864382

Sounds like they tried to get out of the area a week in advance and still got caught up in it.

Several sources still saying that two are missing...

We were on the Bounty during OP Sail this summer and wow, what a beautiful ship and wonderful crew.

Watching it sail into the harbor was breath-taking !

Just heard that the missing are wearing survival gear that should keep them warm and dry for up to 15 hours. Hope they are found safe.

One crew memeber, a woman named Christian (Am I the only one who sees some irony there) called her family before she left and they were surprised when she ended the conversation with "I love you". When asked why? she answered, "you never know what will happen". Sends chills down your spine. Not sure if she is one of the missing or not.

The Bounty was docked this summer, briefly, in the Annapolis, Maryland harbor. It was so beautiful and we enjoyed seeing it. It was right up to the promenade and guests were able to go aboard. God speed to the crew.

Just read an update, and the female crew member, Claudene Christian, and the Captain of the ship are the two that are missing. Now I really do have goose bumps. Did she have a premonition? Her family is headed to NC to wait for news. {#emotions_dlg.sad}

Actually large ships tolerate hurricanes better if they are out to sea and not tied to a dock - the navy always sends all it's ships out to sea in a storm. They just ride the waves and are available for rescues if necessary. The shipyard at Norfolk emptired out days ago - i saw on the news. Those ships are probably east of the storm area by now.

I am very sorry for the loss of the life of Ms Christian. And very sorry for the loss of this beautiful ship. DH & I got to see her when we were in Florida one year.
