The mosquitoes are terrible in Tennessee!!

Started 1338468473.78 in Judith Ripka | Last reply 1339120441.02 by Pamula

One thing I have discovered in the last 2 1/2 weeks is that I can't go out of this house early in the morning or after the sun has set. I have been the target of mosquitoes ever since I got here. DH reminded me that he always got bitten when we were in NY and I didn't. Now we have reversed roles. I have heard that mosquitoes are going to be a problem in many areas this summer due to the nationwide warmer winter that we experienced. I wonder if anyone else sees an increase in mosquito activity already this year? I was on-line last night looking for natural mosquito repellents and will become a 'mad scientist' in my kitchen this weekend as I try mixing different concoctions!

Or I could just go buy a repellent at WMart....lol!!

If you haven't, try also putting mosquito eating birds in your net Search Bar. Are you in the city or country now? Yes, we did pay for such a mild winter!! Love visiting Tennessee...you have so much to do & see there!! And those Smokey Mountains--breathtaking!!!

We returned home days ago from a trip to Gatlinburg, TN and weren't bothered, guess it is in certain areas. Sorry for your pesky inconveniences, and hope you solve the problem quickly. Blessings.

Farmer's daughter ~

I will have to check out your advice and see how to attract those types of birds to my area. I have lots of blue jays, cardinals and robins visiting my back yard, but I really don't know if any of them are 'bug eaters'! One thing I am really missing is my little sparrows. In NY I had sparrows year round and thought they would be here as well...I always thought they were such a common little bird and now I miss them!

now I know where mine are coming from!!!! LOL just kidding!

For the past 3 yrs or so, the mosquitos in my backyard are horrific as well! They're there all the time! I water my backyard gardens in mid-late afternoon and they're swarming me! I MUST put on skin-so-soft before I even go out to water - OMGoodness, they are disgusting!

When we cook out, I have to light two citronella candles near the grill just so I can cook!

After I come in if they got me, I'll rub liberally on the bites alcohol to take the sting/bite and itchiness out. This works well for me - good thing!

BTW Ms Benzgirl - other than your mosquitos, how are you enjoying your move to Tennessee? Are you settled into your new home by now?

I live in SE Tennessee and althought mosquitoes bother everyone else, they have not bothered me much UNTIL this weekend. We were at the river with friends and I have 8-10 bites that are driving me crazy!

When I looked for a natural remedy yesterday, I was reminded of Skin So Soft. I used to have a big old 16oz bottle of that stuff and remember that it worked very well. I haven't purchased Avon in years, but think it must still need to be purchased through a rep, right? I know what you mean about being chased down by those pesky mosquitoes. Since I have been here I have gone to Walgreens twice to purchase two different after-bite products. They work for a few hours but then the itchyness returns. I must be very sensitive because I get enormous welts the size of a silver dollar around each bite! {#emotions_dlg.scared}

Thank you for asking about the move. I just love my new home and am sure it will work very nicely for us once I have found a place for everything and decide where I need to place some wall art. This was a HUGE downsize venture for us but with grown and out of the house children, we just didn't need as much space this time around. Our NY house was/is five bedrooms and I am now in a three, so this has been a big challenge. One thing great is that on rubbish day, they are willing to take my broken down moving boxes.

Gotta share something sort of funny. I have an old sled. The kind kids use. I always put a red bow or a wreath on it and place it out front of my house at Christmas time. I brought it along and my next door neighbor asked me what it was!!! How funny is that! Maybe DH was right when he asked me why in the world I was dragging that old thing to Tennessee! {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

The mosquitoes are just trying to welcome you to Tennesse...and you don't even appreciate it. ;-) Seriously, I think the little blood suckers got a head start this year because of the weather. You can try fogging your yard to help control them, don't allow any standing water and all that. Those measures only help a little for me though. I don't know which is worse here - the skeeters or the noseeums.

I really like the Avon mosquito repellant towelettes. The repellant in them is Picardin, and that stuff works better (on me) than the DEET products. I will use SSS if I'm just going out for a little bit, but if I am going to be outside for very long, I use the towelettes. You can order from Avon online - you don't need a rep.

I got through quite a bit of anti-sith stuff also. The one that works the best for me is also the least expensive. It is called Chiggerex Plus. I get it at walmart for less than $2. It stinks, but works just as well (if not better) than the expensive products.

Hi Benzgirl!

Did you say mosquitoes? Well, that is our state bird, in Fla!{#emotions_dlg.lol}

You should find out if your county sprays for mosquitoes? If not, try to get them too! You may need some citronella oil torches and candles for your outside areas and if that doesn't work. I suggest some indigenous plants in your state that can keep mosquitoes away. Lemongrass works in Fla, but I don't know how well it grows in Tennessee?

Also, walk the areas of your yard to see if there is any standing water around. For example; bird bath, check your gutters around the house. Then get rid of it, if you can! If you live next to a pond or lake? Then their is not much you can really do, but citronella candle or torch. The smoke from them makes it foggy and the mosquitoes temporarily move away!

Good Luck!

Have you met or seen my friend Harvey? Harvey loves Judith Ripka and her jewelry!! He says," Judith Ripka makes me very "hoppy!"

Seriously, I have NEVER found a better mosquito repellent product than the OFF fan powered repellent system. I looked it up on line and it looks like it's changed some since I bought mine a few years ago, but it still operates under the same principle... and IT WORKS!! Take it from someone who constantly gets bitten by every bug known to man and who is allergic to and absolutely HATES the sprays, towlettes, lotions, etc.

This OFF thingee works on batteries and takes little cartridges, and may cost more than a spray, but it's worth it! You clip it anywhere on yourself or you can set it in the middle of a table if you're sitting on the patio. There's absolutely no smell, no obvious liquid blowing around, to the point where you might think... does this really work?

I can attest to it working when a few years ago we traveled to the Texas bayou for a week and came across the most mosquito infested town I'd ever seen in my entire life! It sounds like what benzgirl is experiencing. Well, I'd seen this OFF thing advertised on TV so we went hunting for it and, after three stores, found it and some extra cartridges. I kid you not, I clipped it on my belt and I could walk through a whole swarm of those darn things and they parted like the Red Sea and didn't touch me at all - it was a miracle!!

LOL, as you can tell, I'm very passionate about this particular product! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

jewelfool ~ I feel your pain. Literally. I don't think I have been bitten up so much since I was a kid going away to camp. lol. I was much more tolerable then and a lot less whiny! Wink If your bites are as bad as mine, you will probably have a visible mark for several days - - at least until the next new fleet bites you. Good luck!

iam4truth ~ thanks for reminding me that I can find SSS on line. I probably would have thought of that myself after my second cup of coffee! lol! I purchased some of that Chiggar stuff this weekend. I wasn't familiar with Chiggars, living in upstate but the store clerk at Walgreens told me that it worked very well for mosquito after-bite. It does, but for me it must be reapplied after 3 or 4 hours.

me2me ~ I think you remember that we get to FL every summer, so I am all too familiar with the mosquito problems in FL. Ours up here are really tiny (about 1/2 inch) but the ones that you have down there could carry away a small dog! I'm not sure if lemongrass grows well around here, but I will sure check into that. Thank you. We have all kinds of landscaping projects planned. We don't have any standing water and the ground around here seems to be pretty hard. We did, however, put a bird bath in the back yard and just last night we planted a ring of annuals around it. It looks really pretty, but I probably can't go anywhere near it now! lol. We will be sure to change out the water every day, hopefully keeping those stinking little critters away. DH brought some citronella down from NY, but we haven't felt that we have had the time to sit out back yet. He knows how desperate I am to keep from being bitten, so I'm sure he will set up some torches when we finally do get the chance to sit out.

moongirl ~ I sure am homesick already! You may remember that my DD is renting the NY house from us and she was "unkind" enough to send me a picture of some freshcut flowers taken from my back deck. In the background was my beautiful 150 acre vineyard. I could almost smell the grapes!

Shogirl ~

I am not familiar with this particular product, but might need to check it out. Thank you! I suppose if you are just walking through the back yard or playing in your flowers you can just clip it to any piece of clothing? I won't bother asking you how big it is. I will check it out for myself. Again, thank you.

hi benzgirl, that was so "nice" of your DD to remind you what you've left behind. But you will be making new memories in your new house. And will be making great friends down there also. I have faith in you!!!!

Mosquitoes just love me too!! If there is one within a mile of me it will find me and sting me for sure!!! When Ohio had such warm weather early this year in April, I managed to get so many mosquito bites. I'm going to try to find that thing Shogirl was telling you about. I saw an ad for it in a magazine some time back.

My DD#1, DGD & I went to an Amish community near us and got strawberries yesterday. They are so sweet and yummy this year!! But we need rain bad. The fields and gardens are so dry.

Have a great day. Enjoy exploring your new area.

Hi Benz! I feel your discomfort as I used to be seriously allergic to mosquitos as a child... Oh the ihuge, tchy welts I got!

Maybe you'll grow out of it as I didWink

I have heard good reviews about the clip on OFF product that Shogirl girl has recommended and will be ISO locally for myself. They have said the "skeeters" will be in greater numbers than in recent years and I want to take precautions... Not looking to be their breakfast, lunch or dinner :)

I hope you find new bird songs to touch your soul now that you are in TN... Since my last move, I so enjoy the new songs of the various birds that greet my mornings. I've never seen so many cardinals, blue jays, robins and other birds that I have yet to learn what they are... Nothing like waking to the beautiful songs our winged friends gift us with... :)

I do hope you are happy with your new locale and look forward to more updates about TN.

Enjoy your day and be sure to look for that Off clip on fan device at a local pharmacy chain like a CVS or at a Walmart.

Best to you!

P.S.~ Three bedroom home is still a lot to cleanWink

Hi Girl,

moongirl was right!!! I get those mos. repelents you pitch in a birdbath or pond & they work great. HD or Lowes has them.

Several years ago I purchased some little patches from Q that are repellents & they work great. Don't know if they still have them or not but I will check.

So glad you are enjoying your new city. Your neighbor must be from Fla!! I am almost 62 & yes we used to have horrid winters, (not as bad as NY!!). So i know what a sled is!!ha!!

We have had such a LONG summer already, that's why the mosquitos are "SO" bad. Now the fleas & ticks are something else. They will be really bad too. This week & weekend is going to be great. We will get some rain tonight & the grass & flowers will go crazy!!

OK, just checked & they didn't list them under mos. rep.

I am at work right now but will check when I get home through my order status' to see if I can find where I ordered them.

Good morning, Star.

I just remembered that there is another bird that I am missing. We had mourning doves in NY and their gentle coo could be heard early in the morning. How beautiful! I am not, however, missing the stinking black bird that would often perch himself in a tree just outside of our master bedroom window and caw until we woke up - usually before the clock went off. I left him to my DD! Wink

I hope you have a fab day as well, and I will be looking for the OFF clip-on device that both you and Shogirl spoke of.

Hi, Pepper!

I hope you're having a good day. BTW, I wanted to let you know that we did in fact drive through your part of the country on our way south! The Ohio drive was very pleasant, as was most of the trip. As we got into KY, we had a little light rain that increased as we drove further south. By the time we got to TN, we were driving through an absolute downpour. The fact that we had been in the car all day wasn't helping our mood very much either. Yes, isn't DD just a doll? lol. I thought about taking a picture of the front of our house with the American flag flying on Memorial Day and putting it on my facebook page for her to see, but you know me and computers and pictures! {#emotions_dlg.blink} We have an Amish community down here too. In NY, they were called Mennonites, and everywhere else I have lived they have been referred to as Amish. Go figure. I bet the strawberries are just wonderful and it sounds like you had a wonderful day. I hope to talk to you later, for now I think I better dig into a post-moving project du jour. {#emotions_dlg.crying} Take care.

re the mosquito/ticks issue, that's why we took the dogs to the vet prior to leaving NY and got them on Preventic and flea medication. You will love this. hi benzgirl, Mennonites are a different religious sect than the Amish. Most Mennonites communities allow their people to use electricity and drive a car. Where the Amish don't, especially the Old Order Amish. The Amish are governed by bishops and each bishop sets his own "rules". some are way more strict than others. Most Amish will ride in a car driven by someone else. That's your history lesson for today Smile

Pepper ~

You know a lot about the Amish community! I think that most of the Mennonites in our area of Upstate have electricity (at least the ones that I knew of) but they were not permitted to drive. They could hire a driver if they needed to get into town, but in our area, we had many horse-drawn buggies. When we first moved to NY I found it quaint, but after living there for many years I realized how dangerous it could be trying to pass a horse-drawn buggy at 55mph. Over the years we saw our share of accidents involving buggies or Mennonites on bikes (the other most common way they got around in our area). I was always extra cautious when I was out on the back country roads and approaching either. {#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

Like you said, its probably different from one community to the next depending on how their bishops govern.
