Can you suggest a replacement for my 700 watt microwave oven....

Started 1333266314.693 in Kitchen & Food Talk | Last reply 1334420457.76 by chickenbutt

My compact counter-top oven is dying and I want to replace it soon with a similar size: 700watt, .7 cu. ft., white. I have searched online and also went to Lowes and Home Depot today and could not find what I liked. Can you suggest some I should look at, please? What brand do you have in a compact microwave and do you like it?

And I also went to Target and Walmart. If you can recommend a brand and model number, that would be so helpful. Thank you.

Is your space limited that much that you just want a small .7 size ? While they are ok, I find the larger ones are better and have more features and as you found are certainly more numerous. If you must have a .7 size, you could look at Haier but I would favor the larger Panasonic with inverter technology as it really is the only microwave that cooks at reduced power levels as opposed to cycling on and off.

ITA with 4. I wouldn't go less than 1000, unless I had absolutely no choice.

Brand-wise, I am a huge fan of Sharp for microwaves. I had my first Sharp microwave oven for 18 years and traded up (it still worked, but wanted a newer model) for another Sharp. Then I had that one for 18 years and it actually died at tha point, so I replaced it with another Sharp. I believe mine is 1200 watt and a regular size - perfect. :)

The thing is, with the compact ones, they don't cook or heat efficiently at all. You will find that the larger ones work sooooo much better.

I bought a 700 watt Sunbeam microwave at Target. I love it. I wanted one that wouldn't take up hardly any space on my counter top and this one is perfect. I tried to find the manual to tell you the model number but couldn't find it...sorry. The 700 watt are hard to find. The only drawback is that it takes a bit longer to heat up food. This model has a reminder beep that lets you know if you heat up something and forget to take it out...like my coffee...which I frequently forget about! It goes off about every 90 seconds until you take it out. Check out your local Target or google 700 watt Sunbeam microwaves. HTH - Reva

ITA I would buy the higher wattage and I won't buy anything but Sharp. Same story I had an 1100 watt Sharp Carosel for years and when it finally died I replaced it with another. I also will never buy one that does not have a turntable.

I wouldn't buy anything under 1,000 wattage. I bought a 750 watt years ago for our cottage and it barely could pop a bag of popcorn. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

ITA about the turntable. It makes a HUGE difference with even heating.

Haier has the smaller sizes as well as larger. We bought a 1050 watt 4 months ago with the turntable and it has been excellent. Purchased through Amazon. Had to laugh at some bad reviews because they couldn't get the sticker off the front. It took me 60 seconds to peel it off.

I bought this one in December online at Walmart.com with free shipping to the store: Magic Chef 1.3-Cubic Foot Digital Microwave, Stainless $99.00. It has great reviews. I would like to warn anyone about GE white microwaves, I loved the look of the white and the performance of the microwave itself, but went through 2 in a year because the paint would start to peel off the inside. I originally had a Magic Chef way back in the early 90's that lasted 10 years and I'm thrilled so far with this new stainless one.

Sharp is the way to go. We have had ours 16 1/2 years & still going strong. I too agree I wouldn't be without the turntable. SHARP ALL THE WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, ladies, I'm the poster who was asking for suggestions about a microwave oven.

I can't thank you enough for all your input, advice and suggestions. I am narrowing down my choices to see which one would be the best for me and my counter space. I am also reading reviews online. I will probably make my decision this week.

Thank you, again.

Sharp is a good microwave as I have had a few since I started with MW in the 60's. What you need to understand is that nothing made today is going to last near as long as it did years ago and Sharp actually of late does not have the number of glowing reviews it once did.

Unfortunately for your strict requirement, Sharp does not exactly fit as the smallest oven they make for sale in the USA is .8 cu ft and 800 watts but that really is not too far off ..

I wouldn't care a bit about the brand. They are so cheap now. I would look for...

1. A color and size I want.

2. Make sure it is 1,000 watts or more

3. Make sure it has a turn table

4. Make sure I had enough money in my pocket to buy it.

Simple!

Well others have said similar things but she is wanting .7 cu ft with 700 watts so lets see what happens. As far as brand Panasonic is the Only brand with Invertor technology on some models.

Hi, it's me again. Thanks again for all your input.

At this moment I am considering two different Sharps, one is an 800 watt, 8 cu ft, model number R230KW (the size is perfect for my space).

The other is larger, 1100 watt, 1 cu ft, model no. R303 TWC. It is larger in measurements than the one I am going to replace, but I am considering it only because so many of y ou have suggested buying one that is l,000 watt or more. But it may be too large for my space and I like having counter space in front of the oven.

Other than size they seem to have the same product description. They come in white which is what I prefer.

Please continue to post your input. Thank you.

I'd go with the smaller one. I too had to replace my small one and got a biger one and I am not happy about it. I don't like how it fits in the corner of the counter. Everything else is crowded now, it's just so much bigger.

The little one was perfect for me. I don't cook much in it, mostly reheating and it doesn't bother me if it takes a little longer and it fit nicely in the corner of the counter.

I'd go with the 800 watt Sharpe, but that's just me!!

I have a Sunbeam I've had for over 2 yrs with no problems. It's a 700w because I only use it to heat leftovers or popcorn as I hate microwaved food. Got it for $13 on clearance, but the brand has worked for me.

I agree on the Sharp thing... I had one forever and yes, it still worked when I wanted a newer model that better coordianted with my kitchen... Got a GE, but don't like it. If space is limited, I get that, but I did get a larger oven with higher wattage and while I don't like the model in comparsion to my Sharp, I do like the higher capability and capacity.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice and I should have my head examined...

Again, thanks to all who recommended an oven to me. Your input is very helpful. I will let you know what I finally decided.

Walmart and target both have a small emerson that is 900 watts, we bought one for my sons house as well as my husbands work three years ago and no problems with either of them. They are small in size but cook fast with the 900 watt

Just a short update about a new microwave.

My top choice, the 800 wt. Sharp #r230 is discontinued. Wouldn't you know it!

So I am still looking and researching, and reading lots of reviews. Would you believe I am actually looking at the red Magic Chef 900 watt and have it on my "maybe" list. It has pretty good reviews, overall.

Some I have looked at have the "sensor" technology which seems a good thing. Do any of you have that?

And I know that the Panasonic has the Inverter technology which several of you mentioned.

I pretty much have decided NOT to get a 700 watt, but to go bigger.

Since I can't find all the features I would like to have in one oven, I have to decide what I can live without.

I welcome your input once again.

bigsister,, as I said I had microwaves since the early 60's including kenmore, amana, sharp, emerson, kitchenaid, and panasonic and by far I prefer the inverter technology of the panasonics that have it such as are sold in Samclub. If you want to defrost without starting to cook.. inverter is by far the best.
