It is always cool at the wharf but is usuallly sunny this time of year, great weather!! JRJunkie1332377199.363592 PostsRegistered 1/25/2007Florida Thanks MENTL, layers is great advice. I have only been there once, in Jan., and my DH and I froze the entire trip. catlvr1332377257.5735448 PostsRegistered 5/5/2005 I lived in North Beach and worked downtown for 3 years...love, love, love. Excellent time of year to go. Temps are generally fairly balanced across the Bay area including wine country although this time of year it always seemed a bit bare to me...the vines that is. Chic SF ladies are a bit like French ladies...elegant, neutral, yes they do wear black and taupe year round. You might spot a neon jogging bra. Wear layers and a water repellent jacket on top just in case. What are you doing there and what are you planning for your free time? catlvr JRJunkie1332378315.887592 PostsRegistered 1/25/2007Florida Hi catlvr, I am a "black" clothing girl, so thanks for post. Just didn't want to look too drab/winter for the trip. I have been on Trip Advisor for top things to do, traveling by myself, and arrive Wed. afternoon, and also have all of Thursday free. I don't mind walking, staying at a Market Street hotel within walking distance of many things. My first impression of SF was that it was a huge city that would take many trips to get a feeling for, so if you want to share your favorite things to do, would love to hear. Have done GG Bridge and spent time in Carmel and Sonoma. I am also a cat lover, I own a rescued Grand Champion CFA show kitty, that the breeder was looking to place as he had won all he could and was just another vet bill. He spent the first two years of his life on show tour, in a crate. twopeas1332378714.632055 PostsRegistered 6/5/2011PNW Love San Francisco !! The first time my DH and I went (with another couple), it was a beautiful, warm day in June and we decided to take the trolley to the waterfront. I only had on a short sleeve little T ~~ THEN ~~ the sun went down and it got so cold so fast I was freezing. I ended up buying a $20 coat on the pier. They had a ton of them, so I think they know that people like me will be unprepared. ~ LOL ~ Layer and take a jacket on your excursions even if it is toasty when you leave the hotel. The Alcatraz tour was fun if you have time. JRJunkie1332379678.18592 PostsRegistered 1/25/2007Florida Hi twopeas, we did the Alcatraz tour at night, the coldest/longest evening of my entire life. It was very interesting, but then the temp dropped and we were inside with our teeth literally chattering, praying for the boat to return earlier than scheduled. MENTL1332380570.2171095 PostsRegistered 10/21/2006EARTH I suggest Chinatown, Union Square and the Wharf. Union Square is within walking distance to Chinatown but be prepared to walk. Frannie1332380990.9431720 PostsRegistered 9/27/2006 My hubby and I went to Napa and San Fran a few years ago. We loved it all. But we froze lol. We went out for ice cream one night and the girl who waited on us talked about how warm it was for that time of year (end of May) but we were chilly lol. We loved Alcatraz - very interesting self tour. Pier 39 was a lot of fun. Sausalito was charming. You have to see Lombard St. and Alamo Square. And take a trolly ride. It's a wonderful city. It was rainy 3 out of the 4 days we were there - and in the mid 50's. Didn't see anyone in Spring colors. Our daughter lives there and married there in July 2008 and it was in the 50's even then! JRJunkie1332382848.437592 PostsRegistered 1/25/2007Florida Thanks peggles and Frannie, temp. can be a personal issue, but if I am cold, I am miserable. I am truly looking forward to giving SF a second chance to change my first impression, as everyone I talk to just raves about this city. I am excited about next weeks trip and hope I can experience new travel adventures. catlvr1332384795.725448 PostsRegistered 5/5/2005 On 3/21/2012 JRJunkie said: Hi catlvr, I am a "black" clothing girl, so thanks for post. Visit the sea lions at pier 39 and if you are ambitious walk along the water all the way back to the Embarcadero. Go through the middle of 1-4 and shop. Then go to the Palace Hotel on Market Street and have a drink....yeah!!!! Or walk across Union Square and go through the dragon gates to Chinatown....eat at Brandy Ho....almost at the end of Grant Street where it meets Columbus Avenue. I do say drink wine...especially the gorgeous golden chardonnays. catlvr september1332385567.64314267 PostsRegistered 6/29/2007 When are you planning to arrive? According to NOAA.gov, the weather from Mon-Wed is predicted to be rainy, with temps ranging from 45-59. But the thing about the weather here, is that it can change quickly. If you come later in the week, it might be different. Check online before you leave. september1332385745.3914267 PostsRegistered 6/29/2007 On 3/21/2012 peggles said: Just came back from there on Monday. You can expect summers in the central CA coastal areas to be cool and foggy. I tell everyone who visits us to expect this, but every last one of them refuses to believe it! They have to go out and buy sweaters and sweatshirts once they get here. BurbankKate1332386053.5236007 PostsRegistered 11/18/2007Home of: Disney Studios,W. Last week we had rain, today was the usual chilly morning, by noon the sun was out and no wind. The rain is due back for the weekend and possibly through next week. As others suggested dress in layers. I have a large collection of cotton turtlenecks and vests. If you are downtown on Market St (near Powell?) you can walk to Union Square, there is lots of shopping and good restaurants. Also, the ferry building is intersting with some unique shops and restaurants. Rain or shine I hope you have a wonderful trip. sueinsf1332390294.241759 PostsRegistered 9/5/2006 I would agree with catlvr and redrider. The temp is probably going to be 50's-60's but we've been getting a lot of rain, so it could feel colder. If the sun is out you should be fine. Have an umbrella or basic raincoat and a jacket. Layers are also good. It will be cool in the evening and possibly some mornings. You can never go wrong with black! As to what to do, that also depends on what you are interested in. I wouldn't go to the Wharf but then again, locals would never go there (it's a total tourist trap). Ride a cablecar, go shopping in Union Square, have a cappucino and walk around North Beach, have Dim Sum and walk around Chinatown, go to Golden Gate Park (Japanese Tea Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, etc.), if it's raining you can go to a museum -- Exploratorium, Legion of Honor, or Academy of Sciences, Ferry to Sausalito, drive thru the Presidio, Drive down Lombard Street, see the Redwoods at Muir Woods, visit wine county -- Napa or Sonoma. There are tons of great restaurants, so definitely don't eat at McDonalds or any chain!! Last edited on 3/21/2012 redtabby1332394602.53190 PostsRegistered 8/18/2005 When I lived in San Francisco I rode the cable cars daily to get home. The tourists in their shorts and giant goosebumps always amused me. As the others said, dress in layers and black will be fine. I wear colors and frequently was the only person in a room or meeting not in black. You will also be close the SF Museum of Modern Art. The de Young Museum of Fine Arts is in Golden Gate Park. If you like ballet the SF Ballet company will be performing that week and some tickets are available. I used to love wandering through China Town and North Beach, riding the cable cars to the wharf, and just plain people watching. p.s. please call them cable cars, not trolleys. The cable car museum is another interesting site. I'd take an all-weather jacket or coat, one that is rain-proof. I like something with a hood. It does get windy at times. And rain is always a possibility. I get cold easily, and I always want a jacket at night when I'm in the San Francisco area, no matter the season. One of the things I've noticed about San Francisco is that most people dress in neutrals. I sat in a mall one evening and watched people go by. Black was the predominant color, followed by grey and brown. The overall pallet was muted. The only people I saw in bright colors were children. jasbel1332396133.832322 PostsRegistered 10/21/2008 I tend to like Polar Fleece. It is warm enough for mornings and evenings and light enough if you have to carry it around in a backpack. Funny thing about the rain, we didnt have any for 3 months and had 4 days straight. When I was in the city on Saturday, the weather was great during the day, clear during the evening. We had a couple of windy days, but overall the weather this winter has been fairly mild. One of the nice things about SF is there are no rules as far as dress codes. Wear what you are comfortable in. My only suggestion is make sure you have really good comfortable shoes. SF is city to walk in. Our son and family live in the Bay Area and we love going out there, but all I can say is layer, layer, layer. You never know what kind of weather you will be getting. I have that area bookmarked on my Weather Channel site and it's easy to check the forcast and predictions. Have a marvelous trip and enjoy!
