What can i expect at the Dr's appointment. what type of testing might they do? i am a bit nervous and would like to have an idea of what i can expect. Thanks!

She went to the doctor as soon as she was able to walk, for her there wasn't a test though. I know it is a horrible thing to have, my heart goes out to you! I know you are supposed lay in bed and put one foot on the floor to feel more stable, it will help with the bed spins. I wish you a quick recovery! hungarian41331247319.4471405 PostsRegistered 8/28/2010 I had episode of that too....but not vertigo..had to do with liquid in inner ear sluggish from I believe viral...and due to sluggish..took longer to equalize in my ear when I moved...did go away...no fun!!!!!...hope all goes well!!! Montana1331247699.081148 PostsRegistered 7/1/2005 My daughter had vertigo a few months ago. The doctor had her lay in various positions to see which ones made her dizzy. He diagnosed her with positional vertigo. He said drugs would not help in her case, and gave her several exercises to do at home. The exercises worked and she does not have vertigo now. No major tests are needed once they determine it is just vertigo and nothing more serious. Still, I feel for you because that spinning feeling is terrible. kachina6241331252386.579234 PostsRegistered 10/6/2004New Mexico I had a day or two of that last year and mentioned it to my doctor after the fact. I asked if there was any med I could take if it happened again. She showed me an exercise to do and said there really is no medication to help. I know it really is a horrid feeling, especially if you, like me, live alone. "People will forget what you said. They will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel." K9Meow1331253103.59362 PostsRegistered 12/15/2007Southern California I have been having constant dizziness (regular unbalanced type) and vertigo (spinning for a few minutes every day since Jan. 29). It is awful, I've gone through a MRI brain, ENG test, EKG, and I have both the vertigo and labyrinthitis or Meuniere's Disease. They still aren't positive what it is. I'm on Meclizine for the vertigo but it makes me very sleepy. When the vertigo starts usually positional if I lie on my stomach or turn my head to the side. I lay flat quickly and keep my eyes shut and it seems to pass faster when I do. The regular dizziness I've tried several medicines and will be sent to physical therapy to retrain my brain to adjust to the dizziness. Still dizzy and frustrated. I've had to have people drive me places which is a pain. jetts_mom1331253173.6031779 PostsRegistered 4/14/2010 I've had vertigo for probably 25 years now. I have a lot of sinus/drainage issues and tend to have fluid in my ears frequently. Originally I was prescribed meclizine, until it came out OTC as a travel sickness med, along with good decongestants and antihistimines. It is an awful feeling - it just had me home from work 2 weeks ago. I wish you luck! You were born an original - don't die a copy. beach-mom1331253925.5977923 PostsRegistered 8/1/2007Mid-Atlantic I had this in college. I was dizzy, and decided one morning to go to the nurse's office. She took my temperature and called an ambulance. I was in the hospital about a week with the bed rails up. I just remember being so dizzy and I was a long way from home. My dad did come up (My mom stayed with my younger brother.). I was a swimmer, and I got inner ear infections a lot. They said that could have contributed. I think I did take meds. That was right before spring finals. After I got home for the summer, my own doctor did some testing. I remember some of the tests had me lying flat and moving my head in different positions, which seemed to make me worse! To this day I get dizzy easily. I hope you feel better. 14TonyStewartFan1331254226.251172 PostsRegistered 3/14/2006Northeast Ohio along Lake Erie There really isn't a test...just a bunch of questions from both my doctor and then the therapist my doctor sent me to. I had to go to therapy because mine was so bad...they make you lie down on one side until the spinning stops then they make you sit back up until the spinning stops...they do this on both sides and on your back and stomach. I had to do this everytime I went to therapy and I went to therapy for 3 weeks until mine stopped...the key is to keep your eyes open and focus on one thing until your dizziness stops...if your eyes are closed they can't focus on a black hole. Plus I have to carry Meclizine with me at all times just in case. The therapy isn't fun and it is rough but knowing that someone can help you makes it a little less scary. The one I was prescribed is called Antivert. Mmsfoxxie1331255196.9173305 PostsRegistered 6/19/2010 I've had motion sickness problems all my life and can't ride in all types of vehicles without motion sickness occuring. Recently, for the second time in my life, I had vertigo. I got this really bad cold with sinus issues and the vertigo happened. I had to walk carefully and not shake my head. By the time I got to the doctor, he just asked me what I had been taking and I told him dramamine helped so he said to continue that. In a few days, it cleared up. I also took sinus medication. K9Meow1331318278.4562 PostsRegistered 12/15/2007Southern California Antivert is the same as meclizine. So many people have vertigo problems it went over the counter about 5 years ago. They have lots of different brands. It may say for motion sickness or sea sickness but it is what they have you use for vertigo. Really makes you sleepy. K9Meow1331318387.02762 PostsRegistered 12/15/2007Southern California I take meclizine an hour before bedtime and it helps with waking up without the vertigo problems. The doctor generally does some coordination testing to determine if it's a stroke and so far - so good. Just vertigo. Doctor recommended that I keep Dramamine II (meclizine) on hand. lexi1331321169.377522 PostsRegistered 12/21/2005 JMN..............PLEASE google "Epley Maneuver"........it is probably what your ENT will do in office. geranium1331325833.293670 PostsRegistered 6/8/2006 I take the equate brand for motion sickness. But, a family friend said he stopped eating so much salt which helped tremendously. I have to admit, I agree that it helps. Ruins my whole day. I have been experiencing dizziness a lot lately. Yes, I catch myself eating chips ( after I have eaten them!) I do need to "pitch" them. Appetite is what got Eve into trouble, and is still using it today. Why change something that works? It is very scary to have this and hopefully yours will go away. I am on the 15th friend who has had it or did have it. If it were not for them describing to me when it happened I would have thought I was dying. bonnielu1331437495.5374363 PostsRegistered 10/6/2004Western Maryland I also have positional vertigo. I had crystals in my inner ear--positional vertigo. I went to a physical therapist who was trained in this area. After weeks of doing specific exercises to move these crystals, I was fine and have had no recurrence! Good luck, jmn!!! Dizziness is really awful, isn't it? I take Lyrica for Fibromyalgia. I only take it at night. Sometimes I feel dizzy. I felt it for a short time today. I used to take Jazzerize (sp) with a lady who got dizzy sometimes. She'd just stop and sit and lay down. I hope you feel better. I don't know your age, but the ladies here who are in their 60's or more, like me, will tell you that, unfortunately, Drs. Sometimes never find out the cause of a health problem.it has been more than 5 years, many Drs, many tests, and no one can find out why I sweat so badly, why I can't smell or taste. I hope your testing is something that is easy to fix. yorkies41331517859.9344 PostsRegistered 5/20/2007Henderson, NV I don't usually write anything on the boards but this one caught my eye. Last fall I had what you are describing, severe dizziness, nausea, I can really say, the worst feeling I have ever had! Sometimes it lasted 15 to 30 minutes but sometimes much longer, mild dizziness, close my eyes for a while and it would pass. Other times so severe I wanted to call 911, it just didn't feel like anything I ever had before. The big problem, I found, was not knowing when it was going to hit me so driving was out of the question. I went to the ear, nose and throat doctor after about 3 weeks, he saw right away that I had fluid in my inner ear. He put me on a no added salt diet for a month, it really didn't improve much. When I went back on Dec 14 he put me on a diaretic, Diamox. I take 250 mg a day to dry the fluid, I can thankfully say, I have not had a single episode of dizziness since!!! He doesn't know how long I'll be on it, I see him every 2 months but as long as its working I don't care. I hope you have success in treating your problem, if your doctor doesn't suggest Doamox, you might mention it to him. He also gave me meds if I do get dizzy but I have never had to use them. Good luck and let us know how you made out. Gabby11331518809.24196 PostsRegistered 10/6/2004Sun City, AZ I have two different kinds of vertigo thanks to a fall last November. For some reason, I tripped over my own feet and went down. My head bounced off a tile floor; I got a concussion with a deep brain bleed and I've had the vertigo since. My neurologist sent me to an ENT and the test they did on me was to put goggles on my and then use lights and warm & cold air blown into the ears to see where the vertigo was coming from. I do have a crystal that has broken loose and will float around for a while before settling back where it's supposed to be (Epley maneuveur sure helps with this). I also have the neuro version but we don't know what's causing it. It could be left from the fall or it may be caused by a blockage in the blood flow in the back of my head/neck area. I had a cat scan but don't see the neuro til the 26th on it. I do take meclazine twice a day but that doesn't really help when I'm talking to and looking at someone and all of a sudden the room starts to spin (no head movement whatsoever). I just close my eyes and wait until the dizzy's go away. I do drive (the doc isn't happy about that) but I have to get to work so we can have money to live. This is not fun and I hope it goes away soon. Good luck in finding out what's causing your dizziness. To make it home I had to stop 4 times in a 40 minute period to take a nap, just to feel normal enough to continue to drive to get home to bed. Went to DR. and she gave me some migraine meds, because I was getting alot of headaches too. I never used the migraine meds. I did have two more smaller episodes after that. On a whim I decided to have a delayed response food allergy test. I found I am very "sensitive" to many odd foods I would never think to be allergic too. I cut those foods out, one in particular that I would have daily, was tea. I have since stopped drinking any kind of tea. I will say I have been feeling MUCH better. No more headaches, or dizziness. I am not here to sell anything, but to let you know what a difference this has made in my life. Good luck.
