Solofill for keurig...awesome!!!!!!!!

Started 1330527244.76 in Coffee Talk | Last reply 1337485334.327 by CraftySyl

I got this new solofill cup after reading about it here.Thank you all for the tip.It is the best and makes great coffee. It gets that foamy "crema" (is that the term?) on top and is easy to clean. I got the trader joe's new orleans coffee with chickory last week and it brews perfectly in this little magic cup.

Well as a beta tester for this new solofill, I was also very impressed with it and indeed it will get a very nice crema. Even before this model was released, I and some others were saying that it is very similar in taste to a french press without the clean-up mess.

Although there are folk that have had trouble with the original solofill, I still have mine that I have been using since the summer of 2010 and all of them work well and give a real coffee brew as opposed to the real colored water of the My K Cup.

Glad they are improved, although I never had problems with the originals either. I went with ekobrews and have turned my solofills into strainers. If my ekobrews wear out, I'll give them a look see.

How do you identify the new Solofill? I wasn't able to figure out if Amazon is selling the new one or the original. It looks to me that the solofill.com site sells the original and the new improved. That seems strange.

Look at the holes in the lid. Old has holes all the way down like this

Solofill Cup, Refillable K-Cup For Keurig Brewers

New has shorter slats for holes

Solofill Reusable K-Cups For Keurig K-Cup Brewers

Good eye, I wouldn't have noticed. But my question is about identifying it so I can buy the new one. Maybe Amazon doesn't sell the new one. I guess I can buy from solofill.com directly. It's just that I'm an Amazon junkie and prime member so I don't like paying shipping.

Thank you for posting those photos.

Both of the pictures are off Amazon. I would assume that the sellers of the old one couldn't put the new picture up. It would be cause for a refund if they did.

Also, I don't believe there were ever any other color than red in the older version.

Easist way to see is to count the slots.. new has 10 old has 8.

In the older version they were indeed only red. Of course used correctly, the older ones will give the equivalent or better than french roast but you use a bit finer grind than on the new one which likes it a bit coarser.

First of all in order of importance IMHO

My K Cup makes great colored water

Solofill makes great coffee

Second. in order to use the My K Cup you have to take the part out of the Keurig to put in the Gray My K Cup whereas with the Solofill you simply use it like a regular K Cup.

OK, thank you. I ordered just one of the new Solofills. I will do a test of the new and the old Solofill and the Ekobrew and the MyK-cup. However, I did not realize that I need to make adjustments to the grind of the coffee, and I don't quite know what to do, so my test will not be fair.

I'm liking the new Starbucks Sumatra Kcups but they are too expensive, so I need to use my own coffee at least some of the time. I confess I love being able to remove the Kcup and throw it out without having to waste yet more water washing something.

You are probably saving water, but out landfills are gonna be full of those little plastic Kcups..lol. The solofill is so easy to clean...tap out the grounds, and a quick rinse...quick ...and it is clean.

Sonia, it will not be fair however you if you have burr grinder like the fine Cuisinart one should be able in a few tries and using the same coffee type determine which is the best combination for you.

I tried both the new Solofill and the Eckobrew. Prefer the Eckobrew, because the Solofill leaked all over the place when the coffee was coming out.

The downside to both of them, IMO, is the crema and residue in the coffee. Even with regular coffee brewers I always disliked the permanent mesh filters due to the residue.

I saw a k-cup filter on Amazon called the EZ cup that uses little paper filters. Have been thinking about trying that one, but the paper filters are expensive. Anyone know anything about this EZ cup?

Frankly I do not know what is happening as I have NEVER in almost two years with the Solofill had anything "leak" out UNLESS the coffee is ground too fine and then of course the My K Cup and most others will leak out as well.

This is not really a "leak" but a backup sort of what would happen if you plugged up your sink and continued adding water..

The premier way of making coffee by most experts is the French Press and of course that will leave a sediment as well so indeed I would recommend you either stick with the K Cups or else use the EZ Cup that has the filters.

Another option that I absolutely love as the taste is phenomenal and there is NO Keurig involved at all is a little filter plunger setup that was spoken about on this forum already and IMHO although it is a bit more work than simply adding a K Cup or Solofill/Ekobrew gives a far far superior brew but perhaps you might not have the strength to push as I know my parents do not...

We recently bought the solofill, and we have also found that it leaks.

Then I made the grind coarser. Changed the dial from half-way between fine and coarse, to 3/4 of the way to coarse. It still leaked.

We have the keurig mini, the older model. We were actually thinking of buying the cuisinart keurig style brewer. I would sure like to use the solofill.

Maybe I should change the grind all the way to coarse?

I love the k-cups but they are getting pretty expensive and there are not as many decaf varieties.

I hope I can get this thing to work right. Almost makes me not want to buy the new cuisinart. I don't want to have this frustration with a new expensive machine.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Looking at your Solofill does it have 8 or 10 slots on it ?

oceantown1330618091.5877616 PostsRegistered 10/6/2004

It is the new one with 10 slots.

I just made a cup of coffee using pre-ground starbucks decaf Caffe Verona. The grind does look more coarse than when I ground our own beans, even though we had the dial set quite coarse.

I decided to watch the brewer to see what happens. I noticed that when the coffee streamed into the cup, some of it dripped onto the back wall. It was not really a lot, but I did not think any should end up splashing on the back wall.

In the past, when using the solofill I have also noticed that the drip tray has a lot of coffee in there. That never happens with the k-cups, and I don't think it happens with the my-kcup.

I have also found coffee on the counter!

This is frustrating.

K-cups are getting so expensive. I might have to go back to the my-kcup.

Thanks for your reply and any advice you might have for me.

This is an interesting problem but could you check to see if using the same coffee and the My K Cup it is doing that? Or you could be filling the Solofill too full but lets try the My K Cup first and see what happens..

oceantown1330622906.1537616 PostsRegistered 10/6/2004

Thanks for the reply.

I just made a 2nd cup with the same coffee and used my-kcup. It did not overflow or leak. It had the foam around the edge, and tasted good.

I have been filling the solofill to about 1/8 inch below the ridge, which is exactly 1 level coffee scoop.

Just to make sure, I am now making a cup again using the solofill, one level coffee scoop, 1/8 inch below the max fill line (the ridge).

We will see what happens.

OK, I now have the results of my comparison.

I made one cup of coffee with the solofill. One level coffee scoop.

It dripped a little out the back down onto the wall in back of the cup. I watched closely, and there was also a drip on the left side on the front, right at the seam between the front and side.

Then I made one cup of coffee with the my k-cup. One level coffee scoop.

No drips.

Then the taste test. I think the solofill tasted better. I asked Mr. oceantown to taste both cups. (I had to microwave the solofill cup a little so they were both hot) He said the turquoise mug tasted better than the white mug. He did not know which was which. The turquoise was the solofill, the white was my k-cup. So, the solofill won the taste test.

We are thinking of getting a new keurig, so maybe it is just a thing with this keurig mini brewer (the old model).

Thanks so much for your help. I will not be returning the solofills until I can try them in the new brewer. Hopefully they will not leak.

I do know that with the first solofill there were a number of Keurigs that were not compatible.. You mentioned one level coffee scoop.. how far up the Solofill interior did it get as you want to be above the metal screen and not above the line..I would not return the Solofills but lets see how we can get them to brew well.

By the way.. I forgot to mention that many of the pre-ground coffees allthough they look coarser really are not and therefore they will clog up the screen and cause backup. This happens with one of my healthy coffees so I no longer brew it in the Solofill as it is pre-ground and does not work with the Ekobrew either. I recommend grinding your own beans right before you make your coffee.

Thanks, 4U!

When I used a level coffee scoop, it filled the solofill about 1/8 inch below the line that says 'max fill level'.

While I was watching it, it did not leak a lot. A few times in the past we would find a puddle of coffee on the counter.

Yes, the first solofill was not compatible with our Keurig model. I was happy to see this new model was compatible.

I know the best way to make coffee is to grind the beans right before the brew. But, we won't do that. Our grinder works well, but grinding before brewing takes too long, it is very noisy, and it is very messy to deal with. I have been grinding about one batch of beans, which is probably about 1/2 cup, then storing in snapware. Actually, using the solofill or my k-cup is more work than Mr. oceantown likes to deal with. I guess that is why we like the keurig, the k-cups are easy, fresh, pre-measured, and we just grab our choice for our cup. But I do like having a good option if I want to use other coffee.

I would think though, that this starbucks pre-ground coffee should work in the solofill. Maybe next time I will fill it with a little smaller amount of coffee. I just think that starbucks would know the right grind for the coffee, and it would be frustrating if this did not work in the solofill.

Also, I will probably try grinding our whole bean coffee again, and move the knob on the grinder to the max coarseness. I guess it would not hurt to try. (But I thought if the grind is coarse it will not have as much flavor?)

I have some decaf coconut cream coffee that we bought in a coffee shop and it is so delicious. A cup of this with some half & half or cream... yum! Especially good with a little whipping cream poured in! So I really want to figure out how to use this solofill.

Thanks again.
