Vintage Crystal Cake Dome?

Started 1321325719.55 in Kitchen & Food Talk | Last reply 1321816936.487 by chickenbutt
Hello you fabulous Bakers! Anyone have great suggestions for where I might find a beautiful Vintage Crystal Cake Dome? I have a few pedestals at home but would love a more elegant way to display baked goods and cheese plates. I've scoured the Bay and Etsy. Lots of cute glass options but not many cut crystal options. (Sad to ponder that maybe many of these old beauties are broken and retired...) I did find one at Amazon for $5K...so not gonna' happen... As always I do appreciate your terrific help and suggestions! Happy holidays!

The best place to start looking is at antique stores and flea markets. At the antique stores, ask about where to find one but don't let them know that you really really want one. Prices always seem to go up when they think that you can't live without something!!Smile

Really good advice Sister. Most area antique stores are malls so I can stay a bit anonymous. Availability for these spotty, though. We also have a local store that specializes in Dishes from the Past but I've batted zero there, too. Really don't want a plain W-S glass or Anchor glass dome. Hoping we'll get some additional sourcing ideas. Thinking beautiful 3-layer Chocolate Cake beneath my new dome... Yum!

Hi nnyhagen! Do you ever check out Ruby Lane?

Currently, there aren't any cut crystal domes, but my advice would be to haunt it religiously. It's a great site, & you never know what's gonna turn up. Just for the heck of it, here are some plain cake stands:

Cake stands on Ruby Lane!

I hope you'll soon find a beauty, & that you won't have to break the bank. Good luck!

Hmmm. I know how it is when you're looking for something & need to exhaust every avenue. Also, when others offer suggestions, it's often difficult because we're all so taste specific!

That being said.....

Do you like this?

Cute?

Or?

If you would settle for acrylic, there are some very inexpensive ones out there. Also, they wouldn't be nearly so heavy (which is probably why the old ones are brokenWink) Here is a link for ideas:

I saw a beautiful one in BB&B's bridal department this week. Don't recall the price, but it was "up there"..........

I found one at my local Humane Society Thrift Store. "Charity" thrifts don't charge tax, either.

I am a retired antiques dealer. You will pay an absolute fortune for a true vintage cut crystal cake dome. Settle for a new one if you absolutely must have cut glass. I think you would be happy with a pressed glass vintage dome, it looks cut. Legally crystal can mean anything, including plain old clear glass. Lead crystal must have 24% lead content. The site posted by forest wolf shows a good variety of new domes. Anything new will be imported.

I don't know if glass is ok, in lieu of crystal, but I have a glass one that I think is really beautiful and I paid like $20 for it several years ago. The dome is all ribbed glass (so much prettier than just plain glass!) and it has a nice stand that has ribbing on the base. I got it from one of those cheapy little catalogs that you get in the mail all the time. I'll try to find one online to show you.

ETA: THIS one looks a lot like mine (link takes you to an amazon product page). In fact, it might be the same one. I love ribbed glass. I think it looks so nice.
