AbbyK171 PostsJoined 10/3/2006 I went for a haircut yesterday...angled over my ears, and long on the top....kind of like a wedge type cut. I told the hd that I wanted 1/4" cut off the ends of the top. The top was one length, and not layered. While she's cutting, inch pieces are flying everywhere, and ended up being layered and too short to even part. I was speechless, paid my bill, and ran to my car. What took me months to grow, is now back to zero. I realize in hindsight, I should have blasted her then and there, but what good would it have done?? The hair's gone...I swear hairdressers only know how to cut a 1/2" off and just can't do anything less!!

Just be thankful. lulu21315319112.3516958 PostsRegistered 8/1/2007 I find I need to be clear with terminology. If I only wanted a 1/4" off, I'd use the term TRIM. The fact that I get a haircut every 6 weeks, my girl always asks if I want a 1/2" or 3/4" off. It is not too late to let your stylist know how upset you are. I'd emphasize the fact, you were in shock and speechless when you left the shop. pbkong1315319394.617271 PostsRegistered 5/8/2006 I feel your pain. The last time I had my hair cut, it had grown out considerably (past my bra strap). I gave my stylist directions on the style/cut, but asked that she leave me enough length to pull back in a ponytail. In fact, she had her hair in a ponytail and I told her to make mine that length. I don't know what she was thinking, because when she was done, I had a short bob. It took 3 months before I could put my hair in a ponytail! I had not had this problem with her before, but I'll be much more on guard from now on. All i can say is some are just cut crazy!!. Had a bad experience with cut a few weeks after getting a perm. The girl that gave me the perm had left the shop. Was a little nervous about having some one else do the cut. I did strongly tell the hair dresser just to do a trim. He cut a good part of my perm out. I was so angry, and told the owner that. Well i decided to change Beauty salons, and was not a happy camper with same thing happening. That was about 4 to 5 weeks after that bad experience. My hair is baby fine, and don't like to perm too often. Just get one 2 to 3 times a year. I am now waiting for it to grow in,and debating if i should perm or not? Do try to use good hair products without sulfate or any harsh ingredients. Wear it short, and layered. I do have a high widows peak, and it is sparse in front, top, and crown area. Have a few calics which don't help my issues. lovestodance robbie1315320526.09478 PostsRegistered 2/9/2005 You should say something if you go back. You are paying for a service and if you aren't happy you need to let them know. If you go back to the same person, next time ask for a dead end trim - I don't think they would go past 1/4 inch. GinaV241315320796.843223 PostsRegistered 7/23/2010 nope, it's a common problem. You say a 1/4 inch and they cut 2 inches! Clover291315320909.7038466 PostsRegistered 1/19/2008 Mine is just the opposite! I wanted at least 2" off, and she was very unwilling to cut that drastically. She took off half an inch, I told her to cut more, so she cut another half inch, etc etc until we finally got to the cut I wanted. I think she was afraid I wouldn't like it so much shorter, and she wouldn't be able to put it back, so she just wanted to be sure it was what I really wanted. I know the feeling. I'm an over 65 yr. old and know by this time the hair length that looks good on me. I was wearing my hair shorter for a number of years while I worked since it was easier to care for but a bit longer is more flattering. It had just gotten to a length that was good when I asked my hd to "shag" the bottom for summer since my hair grows thickly from the top off my ears around to the back. Doesn't seem to know what a long shag is. She also can't stop cutting my bangs that I want to grow out a bit. The last cut she cut the crown the same length as the top, exposing a cowlick at the crown - now have to tease the area to cover the odd hair growth there. Have gone to this hd for about 15 years and sometimes she gets it right, sometimes not. My are is small with a large hd school so 99.9% of hd get the same education. She sometimes gets caught up in conversations w/other hds or other customers and that's when I think she forgets what she's doing. Not good. She's been told many times precisely what I want. After writing this I've answered my own dilema - it's time for a change. kimthib1315324819.013560 PostsRegistered 4/1/2006 I just left a hairdresser that didn't understand the concept. I would say TRIM--only 1/4-1/2 inch, and she consistently would cut at least 1-1/2 to 2 inches. I think she considered herself an "artiste" and that she knew better than I did. I feel your pain! I always say I want a "trim" and no more than 1/2" off and yet some still would "trim" off much more than that! I just don't think they listen. Luckily my guy I've had for several years doesn't even have to ask- he knows what to do. Plus these days, my hair is in such good shape that I don't need hardly any "trimmed" off the ends..sometimes we can even skip the trim until next time (I usually go every 8 weeks- use to HAVE to be every 6 weeks). DUH....WENing! :) Brinklii1315325301.8938165 PostsRegistered 10/6/2004 My hairstylist usually shows me how much she is taking off. She usually takes her comb and says, "This is my quarter of an inch." One time I knew that I had a tape measure in my purse as I was going shopping for something afterward, and I wanted to measure it. So, I pulled out my tape measure. Her quarter of an inch was almost a half inch. So, I had her back off. I think it embarrassed her, but I think it taught her something too.
You have to SHOW them not TELL them. Literally hold up your hair and show them exactly how much you want cut. Years ago I asked for a trim and came out 3" shorter. When we shoulder the mantle of compassion no cry goes unheard and no wound goes unhealed. In this world of seemingly endless suffering we have to believe that no one is beyond hope of rescue. Also, watch them carefully as they're cutting. And, with wavy hair like mine, I always have it cut dry (I let them lightly spritz the ends 1st if they insist), as it will 'spring up' once it's dry. And, there's no sense in "blasting" her as you mentioned; everyone should be treated with respect. It's not your hairdresser's fault - you just didn't pay enough attention when they first started trimming. Hair grows, on average, 1/2" per month, and if you Google it, there are several ways to increase the growth rate. Also, your hair always looks shorter for about the first week or two after it's cut. Heck, at 48 and perimenopausal, I'm grateful to just have hair, and a fairly decent amount of it.;) I'm sure you are as well. sofia1315326066.7573133 PostsRegistered 7/26/2005 This one thing that scares me to death about hairdressers. They never seem to get it right.... Claybasket1315326490.303171 PostsRegistered 10/12/2010 Oh no! I am so sorry that happened to you. Of course, we are thankful that we have hair but it is frustrating to grow it out and then end up with haircut that is now layered when you specifically didn't ask for layers. Happened to me several times. I finally found a hairdresser that listens and understands exactly what I want. May I suggest you purchasing some Aveda light elements defining whip or light elements shaping wax to help you adjust to the layers. Both of these products are excellent for shorter hair--use just a little and build as necessary to give a piecey, toussled look that doesn't appear too layered. Good luck! When the hair is wet and they cut it, it is so easy to cut off too much. Everyone thinks it's best to cut hair when it is wet but that is not true. I am really pleased with my dry cuts and I go to a salon where just about every stylist in there dry cuts. Abby ((hugs)) I know it's a bad experience. I still cringe when I think about the horrible haircut I got once that was so short on top I can't even explain it to you. I don't even know what happened and I left the salon in tears. That was around 1991 and i didn't even have enough bangs left to use a curling iron on.....it was traumatic. Last edited on 9/6/2011 When humor goes, there goes civilization.
~Erma Bombeck You cannot SAY 1/4" or 1/2" or 1" or any other measurement. You SHOW him/her how much to cut using your hair or your finger to demonstrate how much. Buzzards fly in packs. Eagles soar alone.

As I was driving home, one part of me was berating myself for being so superficial...chemotherapy has left women with no hair. On the other hand, when I got home, everyone crabbed, "why did you cut it so short"? "you know you don't look good in wicked short hair"! I'm off work today and in hiding...I'll be more vigilant next time... I had a great hair dresser, who really paid attention to what I asked for and I always left the shop very pleased. Unfortunately, she left and I have no way of finding her. The main problem is that they turn you away from the mirror, so you don't realize how much is being cut until it's too late. If they kept the patrons facing the mirror, it would give them a chance to see what's going on and stop the cut before it goes too far. I think half the problem is they get to talking to the person in the chair and they just get carried away. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and he no longer votes democratic.......I don't know, I heard it somewhere. Hi Abby .... you should have pulled away immediately when you saw her either not cutting it the way you wanted it OR inche pieces A few years ago I went for a haircut told her exactly what I wanted AND actually how - She brushed it out and started, THEN........... I saw a HUNK come off and IMMEDIATELY pulled away and siad "what are you doing ? what did you just do ?) she looked at me blank - I got up and was walking over to the Owner as the owner was also walking towards me too..... told her what happened and I was leaving - owner took care of me at NO charge - additionally the owner was around there WHILE I was explaining what I wanted & how too ANYWAY - never...... ever........ be afraid to pull away, stop them & leave with hair as is OR ask for the owner, manager AND/OR someone else to finish you up AND - if you get a BAD color, cut, or highlights don't be afraid to voice that while in the chair and on your way out AND/OR even to ask for it to be 1/2 the price OR FREE
