I tried this technique with my shoes. I broke my foot earlier in the year and had to buy wide walking shoes when the foot was swollen. Now that the foot is healing and less swollen, the wides are a bit looser. I tried this technique and it does keep the heel more situated in the shoe and tightens the fit.
I had never seen this before. Glad I came across it. Hope it helps someone else.
