Question about Cricut Overlays?

I do not have the Cricut Expression (1 or 2), I have the Imagine. Anyway, watching AG today on HSN and her cartridge for the Cricut is beautiful but it has an overlay. She said "universal overlay." If I remember correctly, at least for the Expression 2, they did away with the overlays and there is no place to use it? By the sound of it, it seems Cricut is going back to overlays. How can you use the AG cricut cartridge/overlay if there's no place to put it?
