Can I use Aunt Nellie's Holland-style onion to make pickled onions?

My DH picked up Holland style onions and really wanted pickled! They contain citric acid which doesn't mix well with vinegar. Any ideas?

Are you serious? They are already ""pickled."" She used citric acid in lieu of vinegar.

They are brined and taste salty, not pickled, to me. I really want sweet/sour pickling. I would be happy if they were already done. That is what he thought he was buying.

Brining is a form of pickling.

These pickles will never be sweet/sour pickles. I have a recipe for sweet/sour pickles that I found on line once upon a time. They taste just like the ones my mother slaved over a stove to make. It is at cooks.com and is entitled sweet and sour pickles.

Perhaps he could take them back if they have not been opened.

Holland style or German style probably implies salty brining.

Thanks. That answers my question. I have made pickled cukes, beets and raw onion but was hoping I could pickle these. I'll probably make creamed onions out of them. Maybe eat them plain. Won't put vinegar in them! Thanks again.
