Healthy Popcorn in a Bag

Started 1320555572.663 in Recipe Swap | Last reply 1321135352.4 by lavendersage

I was reading about this somewhere and maybe it was here. I had never made regular popcorn in a paper bag in the microwave.

1 paper lunch bag

1/4 cup regular popcorn

I sealed the bag with double sided tape

microwaved on the popcorn cycle plus 30 seconds and it was perfect.

A sprinkle of Himalayam Pink Sea Salt

Appologies if this has been posted ... but it's really good and I'll be making it as a regular snack.

I don't even tape the bag, I just ball up the top---nothing ever pops out.

  • these are also ones someone posted here quite awhile ago.
  1. Pour a quarter cup of popcorn kernels into a paper bag
  2. Pour a quarter cup of popcorn kernels into a paper bag
  3. Fold the top of the bag three times.
  4. Place the paper bag in the microwave.
  5. Set the timer for 40 to 60 seconds. (It can take 3-4 minutes)
  6. Remove the bag and pour the popcorn into a dish.
  7. Cook unbaked kernels for about 15 to 20 seconds.
  8. Add the extra popcorn to the other batch.
  9. Pour melted butter and salt onto the popcorn.
  10. Serve.

(Fast and inexpensive)

  1. Pour some kernels into a heat-resistant Tupperware container. A little goes a long way. You could use a cheap microwave plastic bowl but the heat may warp the bottom!
  2. Pour some butter (not vegetable oil) onto the popcorn, just enough to prevent the kernels from shifting when the container is tilted.
  3. Heat in microwave until popping slows (this could take around 2 minutes. depending on the power of your microwave). Kernels will not start to pop until they gets very hot, which could take up to 30 seconds. Warning: Do not place the lid on completely. If popcorn burns, note frequency of popping and stop before it becomes this slow on future batches.
  1. Serve.

I haven't tried this yet.

Thank you, Tabbycat from Tabbychic! This sounds a lot healthier than those bagged popcorns you buy.

We also do our popcorn in a brown bag with the top folded over twice, about 1" total, and microwave until the popping slows. I always use my silicone baster to coat the sides of a bowl with olive oil; then I toss the popcorn with kiosher salt in the well-oiled bowl. It tastes so good!

How bad is it to just pop it on the stove in olive oil? I guess plain hot air is better for you, less fat and calories and all, but I love it cooked in the olive oil myself. Just wonder if I am killing myself since I have it like this most every day.

hi Tabbycat, I just made this and it's so good and easy! Thank you for posting this method! We usually cook on the stovetop but I love this way because there is no mess to clean up and it's so fast. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}
