Skillet Apple Pie from Southern Living....it is THE BEST!!!

Started 1315751853.083 in Recipe Swap | Last reply 1316544599.46 by Gloria

I made this pie last weekend for a family gathering and it was a huge hit! It's super easy and just soooooo wonderful:

Today, I'm going to make the Apple-Cream Cheese Bundt Cake that was on the cover of the magazine. Having my in-laws over for Sunday supper. Hope it turns out as well as the pie. Here's the recipe for the cake:

I saw that bundt cake recipe when I browsed the magazine at the library and it looked awesome.

Would you let me know how it turns out?

Thanks.

How does the bottom of this pie come out since you put the crust over butter and sugar like that? is it cripsy or soggy?

I just got this issue of Southern Living in the mail and about swooned when I saw that cake........my Bundt pan is too small to make it in-might be a good thing since there's only 2 of us. It looks SO good. I can't wait to hear how it is

CardinalGirl_, thanks so much for your review on the Skillet Apple Pie-I don't have a cast iron skillet but my daughter has.......I'll send the link to her......it will save me copying out the recipe for her.

Thanks again---gosh, I love apples,

Carol

I have the magazine right here on the couch, trying to think of a reason to make it, it looks so good. Please let us know if it is as good as it looks.

Thank you SO much for sharing this recipe. I just made it with peaches - can I say DELISH!!! The butter and brown sugar on the bottom cooked up like a wonderful warm caramel sauce. Absolutley fantastic!

CardinalGirl, thank you for posting this. I kept picking up the magazine & gazing at these 2 recipes but didn't want to buy the whole thing for only 2 recipes. Now i have them!

CardinalGirl:

This is a recipe I clipped from our local newspaper some time ago. Very similar to the one you mentioned above, except the filling is a little different. The remainder of your instructions are the same. It too is fabulous!

For filling:

  • 6 cups chopped peeled tart apples (about 6 medium)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 4 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Mix all the italized ingredients together; add to apples to coat.

The cake was great! I had to buy a new bundt pan to make it, since mine was too small, and it was worth it!

tsavorite: The bottom is not soggy on the pie. It's almost like a praline bottom, with some warm carmel sauce. Wonderful!

Carol--I didn't have a cast iron skillet, either....but Wal-Mart had a preseasoned one for about $12.00. I bought it for the pie, knowing that I'll use it for plenty of other things, too.

CG,

Do u think I could use a Technique skillet and get the same results as cast iron pan?

This apple pie sounds so yummy -- somewhere I read that cast iron skillets should not be used on the 'new' glass-topped stoves. Does anyone have info on that? thanks.

CardinalGirl, made this apple skillet pie last night & it was fantastic!! So easy! and I really loved the butter/brown sugar mixture on the bottom! I used Splenda to make it too!! I also added some cinnamon to the sugar on top on the crust. I will be making this again for sure!! Thanks for the link!!
