What side dish goes with chicken or turkey pot pie?

I love to serve Stouffer's Harvest Apples - it's almost like apple pie filling - for some reason it really goes with a pot pie.

I thought a pot pie was a one-dish meal. It has pastry, meat, vegetables ... why does it need a side dish?

Beets might be good too - very colorful. I can't imagine just slapping a pot pie on the table and nothing else.

Salad, or some green vegetable that isn't starchy and not in the pie, like green beans, spinach or broccoli.

I'm with Desi on this one. You've already got meat, veggies and a starch (the crust). A salad sounds good to me.

Agree...........all you need is an eclair or cream puff (when you're packing in the calories, might as well do it right!)

I can see both sides to this. As bad as they are for you, the pot pie is essentially complete so keep the side dish as light as possible; a small tossed salad, applesauce, maybe some canned pear slices over lowfat cottage cheese.

I agree with those who say all you need for dinner is in the pie itself, meat, vegetable and a starch and just because the meal is contained in one dish doesn't make it less than a full meal. I see a pot pie as no different than a casserole or a meal cooked in a crockpot.

A side salad might be a good accompaniment but nothing else.

When we're having a pot pie or something along those lines, I like to have a bit of something on the cool and tart side, maybe some kind of pickled cabbage or a three bean salad.

I go to this restaurant occasionally and they serve the absolute best chicken pot pie! They serve it with a lovely tossed green salad with a light vinegarette dressing and a little flaky croissant roll. Perfect meal!

Fresh baked bread. My Mother always wanted mashed potatoes with hers. Just dumped the pot pie over them.

It doesn't have to be the typical 'bad' comfort dish. It can be a one-crust pie, with a low-fat filling. More veggies, less meat, etc.

I too see it as a one dish meal, though I could see it with salad. The apples sound good, but I suppose I would almost see them as dessert, though I love baked apples as a side with some things.

I usually serve mine with cole slaw.

I like a fresh green salad with a nice vinaigrette dressing. Cool, tart, veggie crunchiness to go along with the hot, creamy meat pie. The apples would be nice too -- sort of a sweet side dish/dessert.

If you saw our beautiful homemade pot pies, you wouldn't even think of anything else to go with it! It has homemade pie crust, carrots, diced onions, green beans, green peas, a little red bell pepper, mushrooms, and homemade chicken sauce/gravy with a touch of sherry in it and big bitesized pieces of chicken breast. We usually serve a green salad, but our pie is a wonder unto itself! I also HAVE served coleslaw (usually a sweet/sour vinegar based dressing--not the creamy mayo type but even that is ok too) with it and that is good too.

People beg for more!

A nice glass of red wine. I really like your suggestion of apples. Sounds perfect to me.

A fresh green salad and/or maybe a cranberry relish type of salad.

The Stouffers apples are very good, they would be nice over vanilla ice cream also. I think cranberry sauce, salad, and green beans go well with pot pies.

Definitely wine of any kind! Cranberries are a great idea too - forgot that one. I make a cranberry mousse (jello salad) for Thanksgiving and we always have it with my turkey pot pie provided there's any left by then.

Thanks again all!

And ps: I'm a firm believer that nothing in moderation is bad for you. I love homemade pot pie and I hardly think a little crust and gravy is going to compromise my health and waistline.
