Costco chicken smells funny

Started 1338915556.383 in Kitchen & Food Talk | Last reply 1338962012.37 by jewel3

Has anyone noticed that their Costco chicken smells really strong upon opening the packages? I'm talking about the raw, fresh chicken packaged in the individual bags that can be torn apart.

This is the 3rd package that has smelled like this. I opened the packages within 1-2 days of purchasing, so I know they can't be old. I called the store, and they claim they haven't gotten any other complaints.

We don't have a Costco but I'd bring it back if in doubt. Not worth taking any chances.

I have had the same problem. I really like the store, but don't buy their fresh chickens.

Okay, so it's not just me. I have never had this problem in the past. I wonder if they changed companies?

I'm not concerned with getting my money back as much as where the smell is coming from and if there is a widespread problem they need to address.

They wanted me to bring the chicken back and I did.

Does it smell like it's gone bad or like something else? How was it packaged? I haven't bought Costco raw chicken but I have bought Bell and Evans chicken recently in cryovac (sp?) packaging and noticed a very strong smell--not like spoiled chicken but just an odd, different type of odor. I washed it thoroughly and it went away, but the chicken didn't taste as good after cooking as it used to when packed in normal plastic wrap. I thought maybe the cryovac packaging had something to do with it. It's supposed to keep it fresher longer but I'm not going to buy it again.

I never make it to the raw chicken because their rotisserie chicken always gets me first!! {#emotions_dlg.laugh} Their cs is outstanding, I'd bring it back.

They are vacuum packed (I think) in thick plastic.

The smell is VERY strong, but I am not 100% sure if it's rotting chicken smell. It smells sulfur-ish, I guess, but it is extremely disgusting.

I guess I'd like to know if the smell is due to the chemicals they use to wash the chicken (yuck) or if it's just plain spoiled.

Yes, I had the same thing happen. I returned it and now only buy the frozen chicken~~

JJsMom, that sounds like cryovac. Very tight vaccum packing. It's an odd smell isn't it? If it was funky, I think you'd know that right away. I'd take it back and tell them it smelled off. I think it's a combo of the packaging and possibly some preservatives, although the Bell and Evans chicken I bought is supposed to be organic and it still had that strange smell.

Thanks, coldlake. I already threw it out. I could probably retrieve it, but I can't go back until this weekend. I didn't think it was worth it. I don't know if I should bother trying to get a refund when I don't even have the chicken in question. I find it really hard to believe they haven't had any other complaints. I mean, the smell was DISGUSTINGLY strong.

So you think the smell is due to chemicals, not the chicken having gone bad?

I don't think I'll be buying it again anytime soon. This reminds me why I need to become a full-time vegetarian (I'm still not there yet ... ).

I don't know if the smell is chemicals or the plastic wrap or what. I've been on farms and it kind of smelled like live chickens which is not very pleasant, yeah, enough to make anyone go veggie for sure. I hate messing with raw meat and poultry too and probably will stop eating it one of these days.

Forgot to add, I think you could take in your receipt and get a credit from Costco even without the funky chicken.

I happened to watch "The Doctors" yesterday. They had a segment on chicken and how its washed. Yuck! It really makes me not want to even buy chicken anymore! Perhaps check their website for a recap of yesterdays show? I wish I could buy my chicken from a local farm and not the grocery store.

We are picking up our 6 cut up chickens at a farm today fresh, and another 6 in a month. Love their chickens, about 5 and 6 pound each, cut up - lots of soup bones - YUM!!

I never bought raw chicken from Costco. Something about all that liquid they sit in turns me off.

I would call them back and have them note your account to give you a full refund.

If you buy organic chicken, you can eliminate the dunked in chlorine stuff. Also "air dryed" (or whatever it is called, "air" something LOL)

I haven't bought chicken at Costco, except for the rotisserie chicken, but did return a tray of shrimp yesterday - it was very peculiar, rather tough and the taste wasn't normal - even my cats, who will pretty much eat everything in sight, wouldn't touch it. I took it back and they didn't give me any problem about refunding my money.

It seems like almost no food tastes good like it used to - I wish they'd leave well enough alone, and stop trying to improve on what God made, what with the antibiotics, growth hormones, genetic engineering, and other stuff. I don't know when I last bought a piece of fruit I really, really enjoyed - I got peaches the other day, and rather than their being sweet and juicy, they were bitter and hard. The last plums I got were mealy. I almost hate to cut into the watermelon I have in the refrigerator....

All raw chicken smells strange to me.

Funky - We buy our fruits which are very good at Whole Foods, or the organic dept. at the grocery store, but in the summer, we'll be eating strawberries (ate my first one today), rasperries, plums, and cherries from our own trees and plants. Love picking them. Also we're eating lettuce from our garden now too.

Had our first meal of that fresh chicken tonight on the grill - very tasty!! We'll get 6 more in a month, and 6 more in Sept. Love chicken!

I buy organic chicken at Costco every week and have never had it smell off. Always take back any product that has a problem as they will make changes based on customer feedback whether that means using different packaging or a different supplier. Last edited on 6/5/2012
