DH gave me an open design ring that was made by a local goldsmith for our 20th anniversary which was 24 years ago. The ring looks like a scroll with ruby cabs at each edge and rubies & diamonds in a setting without prongs. I loved the look of the space in the center.
About a year into owning it I was shopping and the opening hooked on a store hanger and pulled the ring open enough to let it slip off my finger. I was lucky to realize it in time to catch it. I took it to the maker and had him build a connecting bar of diamonds to close the space. It still looks pretty, but I couldn't risk another accident.
Maybe a ring made in silver or "base metal" would be stronger than mine in 18K. Gold can be soft and that allowed it to bend.
