What kind of partial refund should I be entitled to? Calling all gold "experts"

This is not about a QVC piece but can I still post about it? You guys always seem to know your info on gold so I thought you could help me out! Much appreciation!

I ordered a beautiful champagne diamond ring set in yellow gold. It was advertised as 14K but when I received it tonight it clearly states 10K gold.

I do have a good relationship with the online seller and I do think this was an honest mistake but I would like to ask for a partial refund since I'm getting a lower grade of gold. Here are the specs:

45 champagne diamonds, total carat weight: 0.5ct
diamond clarity SI1
10K gold, solid, not plated
weight 4.5 grams

Original asking price was $625.00 when it was advertised as 14K. How much of a refund would you ask for? What would be fair?

Thanks!!!!!

Can you comparison shop for the same ring in 10K, to see what others are asking?

Off the top of my head, I'd want a $200 discount, if not more.

Here -- get out your calculator! {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

  • 14K gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 58.3% gold.
  • 10K gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 41.7% gold. 10K gold is the minimum karat that can be called "gold" in the United States.

IMHO, $625 is way too high for just a half carat champagne diamond 10k ring. Champagne diamonds are not worth as much as white diamonds, and 4.5 g of 10k is worth about $100 for the gold itself. If you love the ring, of course it will be worth more to you. I think ennui's suggestion is a good starting place.

I agree. You paid way too much. I'd get a full refund and start over. I would not have paid $300 for it.

I agree that you should ask for a full refund. But if you still want to ask for a discount, you can look at the 10K gold and diamond rings on Jewelry TV, jtv.com, and get some price comparisons. I just checked over there. They have lots of champagne diamond rings. Prices range from about $175 to over $1,000 depending how big the ring is (how much gold). Examples: .50 ct champagne diamond solitaire gold ring, 329.99, item THW145R; 1.00 ctw champagne and white diamond gold ring, 399.99, CDLC20; and .33 ctw champagne and white diamond gold ring, 249.99, ATC004.

100% as it is significantly not as described. Those are tiny diamonds, of poor quality, and not worth much. Return it and keep looking.

Hi guys! Thanks for all of your input.

The jeweler refunded me over $200, as well as shipping and also also sent ahead a free gift as a thank you for being understanding of their mistake.

I'm sure many of you will still say that it's not "worth" what I paid for it but the ring is sturdy, the diamonds are well set (I had my jeweler check it out this morning), a one of a kind piece and exactly what I have been looking for for over five years for a right hand ring. So for me....i'm thrilled to have it.

I so appreciate your feedback and it helped me quite a bit!

The seller should give you at least 1/2 off since they made the mistake. There are Federal gold standards and if they advertise something as 14K and then sell 10K they can get into big fines! If you keep the ring tell them you want half off and you will report them to the Weights & Measures standards! Otherwise I'd send it back!

You should get all your money back and shop again - wisely. It may not be an honest mistake. Big difference 10KT to 14KT. Shop - in person - at several reliable jewelry stores - to be sure you're not being "taken". Something might look good - but not worth the price.

Yes, there should be a significant reduction in price.

On a positive note, 10K is stronger so the diamonds may be safer in their settings.

14KT gold holds diamonds very well. If you thought you paid for 14KT - that's what you should have gotten. Sounds like you paid way too much.

Paid too much. You should get back at least $200.00

Tough crowd here but looks to me like it turned out well. The $200 refund sounds reasonable, imo.

I'm glad you found a ring you love in gold and diamonds for around $400. Not bad at all in today's prices for both gold and diamonds; especially if you like the color of champagne diamonds. SI1 diamonds are considered quite nice for mele. Congratulations!

If you are happy with it then all is well!!!! If what you ended up paying was what YOU would have paid for 10kt AND you got a gift then that is fantastic!!!! Glad it worked out for you!!!!!

Sammi, If I were you I would get a total refund and then go to JTV.com and buy you a champagne diamnd ring. I got a 2.25 ct. champagne and white diamond ring from JTV that is outta this world gorgeous for Christmas! It was $799 and is top rated. The stones are just so sparkly and clear.
