What are these black bits of paper that came with my gold rings?

Hi guys!

Wondering if you could help me solve a mystery. Years ago I bought a set of 3 18k plated stack rings. Each came in their own tiny plastic baggie and in each baggie was the ring (obviously) and a small square of thin black paper.

Does anybody know what these are called? Are they there to keep the jewelry from tarnishing? I would actually like to buy some more as it seems that those three rings are the only things in my jewel box that do not tarnish.

Thanks!

Yes, they are non tarnishing strips to prevent plated metal or silver from tarnishing. You can buy them at craft/hobby stores in the jewelry making section.

Awesome - do they work on solid gold pieces as well?

I could be wrong but I don't think solid gold tarnishes. All I use to clean my solid gold jewelry is a soft toothbrush and a tiny dab of toothpaste....I even use it on my diamonds - it cleans my jewelry up beautifully!

It depends on the alloys. The alloys (copper, silver) could tarnish.

Yes - I have a few 10K pieces and I assumed those would be more likely to tarnish but I could be wrong.

That's true, I guess I took the OP's words (solid gold) too literal when I replied. None of my 10k or 14k gold has ever tarnished including pieces I have that are over 60 years old from my grandmothers.

I buy these on ebay, and line my Preserve anti tarnish jewelry pouch with them.

I toss those little black deals in my jewelry box when they come with a new piece.

The OP stated 18k plated, non plated gold doesnt come with these anti tarnishing papers. I save them and put them in my silver box. Some of my gold is left outside my box and doesnt tarnish.

not my will but Yours be done.
