filled with resin in his rather disreputable looking sneakers fail to convince anyone else of it's high quality...?

I've said all along that I don't have a problem with resin or silicone filled if it's just a day to day item. Clearly, for 'investment' jewelry, I wouldn't be terribly interested no matter who they get to stand on it... All my jewelry need not be investment quality for me to wear it and enjoy it, but really, standing gently on a ring doesn't convince me of much of anything. Frankly, it just looks goofy.
