A picture would help! I had something growing in my yard, in the flower beds that I knew I didn't plant. I dubbed it the "mystery plant" and sent a picture of it to my neighbor who is friends with a master gardener. Within a few days she sent me a clipping that was in our local paper about "the mystery plant", that's exactly what they called it.
A brief description:
Red/pink spikey petals at the end of long stems, no leaves visible.
Evidently, birds are responsible for spreading the seeds, so even if you didn't plant it, some bird dropped the seeds and up it came. The actual name is "Hurricane Lilly" or Lycoris radiate".
