My neighbor gave me some asparagus roots last year. After two years in a mal-nourished spot, they have to be pulled and moved. When and how do I do this? Just winter them over like bulbs?

I was always taught to plant by the signs, and we also dug up and replanted by the signs. According to my almanac, I would plant above ground crops August 3, 4, 30, and 31, and September 8, 26, 27 and 28. You can look this up at Almanac.com/BestDays. I suggest you dig a circle around the asparagus and move dirt, roots and all, to a deeper hole in better soil. Mound the dirt over any of the asparagus growth, and cover lightly with mulch or straw to help prevent the roots from freezing.
