It may be rich in texture, palette, or style, but there’s definitely something special about it. It doesn't always have to be expensive, yet it tells someone that you really put some thought into this gift. It's an image and a sound that’s locked in my memory banks for all time. It started while listening to my records as a teenager in Minnesota — that moment when I brought home a new vinyl and put it on the stereo. The anticipation of tunes when the arm of the stereo would slowly move over, gently touch the record, and you'd hear those scratches as the needle touched the vinyl. It was usually followed by my dad saying, "Turn that down, are you deaf?" Long live rock and roll, Dad! Wait! I'm aging myself again. And don't tell me you're too young to reme... I was just sitting down to write my annual QVC holiday blog with one train of thought in mind. I'm unceremoniously throwing this good ole’ brain of mine in reverse and totally switching gears for you fine readers. The reason for this is a simple list. Recently at QVC, we program hosts had an opportunity to go “window shopping.” Basically, all of our merchants and vendors unloaded their sleighs full of goodies into a huge conference room. One of my favorite things about the holidays is gift shopping. I love searching for just the right present for my family and friends. Sometimes I get ideas from things that have been given to me, or I jot down little notes throughout the year when my husband or best friend make mention of something they'd like to get "someday." This year, I'm really trying to use the theme of "practical luxury" to guide my gift selections. I think we've all cut back on spending, shopping, and little treats for ourselves. I should probably say right off the top that the Boesing family Christmas is a big production. What this means is that growing up, Christmas started a week early and lasted through December 26, my brother’s birthday.
What were we doing a week early? Secret Santa. A week before Christmas, our family would gather around the kitchen table, put numbers in a hat and, with great ceremony, each person would pull a number from the hat and make a big show of destroying it (i.e. eating the slip of paper) so no one would know their person.
