I Could Use Some Help With Food Allergies - I Don't Think There Is Anything

left to eat!

I am going to an Allergy Specialist and got my results back from the Dr. yesterday. He gave me a list of what I can eat which is barely anything. I only went to get shots for my pets and find out I have been eating the wrong things most of my adult life.

Guten Free, no sugar, yeast, dairy, eggs, tuna, nuts, lettuce, cereal, oats, oatmeal, honey, rice, etc., and a long list of fruits and vegetables I can't have. I am adding many supplements to that and I will be broke. I don't like fish and fruits and veggies so this will be very difficult for me. I veggies I would eat were green beans and those are ruled out too. How hard is gluten free to find with no yeast or sugar?

I have no idea what to substitute for what, like cereal, bread, dairy, oil and everything else. I have never shopped at Whole Foods or places like that and don't know where to start. I went to the store last week and stocked up on everything I can no longer eat. I no longer cook which will make it even harder and found out I am hypothyroid.

That leaves fish, turkey and a few vegetables and fruits.

I know there are experts on here that know what to substitute for different foods and would love some knowledge and suggestions. I can't be the only one that is allergic to this many foods, plus dogs, cats, pollen, mold and pollen. I am taking shots for my pets and will start the supplements and minerals he suggested but as far as food is concerned I am lost. I'm afraid I won't eat anything and end up weighing about 20 pounds when I cut out sugar and all the good stuff, I am already thin. I can't even think of a cereal I could eat and I tried soy milk years ago and hated it. But I want to try it since I have been sick for so long with Lyme Disease and other illnesses.

The Dr. came me a list of things to eat and not eat and the eat list is terribly short. Does Whole Foods or someone else offer a good selection and is it worth the prices they charge?

Help. My insurance doesn't cover a dietician.

There's a cookbook ""The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook"" by Mickey Trescott that you may want to look at. It has a list of foods to avoid and foods to include with some good recipes for allergies. Uses a lot of coconut. Has a great recipe for Garlic Mayo using coconut concentrate. Take care.

This list sounds suspicious to me. May I ask how the testing was done and where you learned about this doctor? I would absolutely, positively get a second opinion if your allergist told you to avoid gluten and lettuce. That does not sound right to me and I've dealt with allergists and allergies my entire life, as have most of my family members.

I agree. I've had the peanut/tree nut allergy for 47 years...way before food allergies became "en vogue". When you are allergic to a food that means you can not eat it without some nasty symptoms. They don't have to be life threatening like mine, but still. You can potentially be sensitive to certain foods without necessarily being truly allergic. I have a boat load of other animal and airborne allergies and have been on injections for over 30 years. And none of my allergies ever came as a shock to me after testing confirmed them.

This all sounds fishy. I agree with Chynna that a second opinion would be a good idea.

Re: I Could Use Some Help With Food Allergies - I Don't Think There Is Anything

I found out in my 30's that I am allergic to corn, wheat, potatoes, tomatoes, citrus, milk, and egg whites, and also have a list of foods I have an intolerance to as well, such as honey, olives and mushrooms. Like you said, I too probably ate several of these foods every day of my life. My parents just thought I had a nervous stomach, and never had a clue my problem was food allergies. I still suffer with intestinal issues when I eat these foods, but the absolute worst ones are milk, egg whites, any type of citrus fruit or juice, mushrooms, honey, and olives. Over the last 25 years I have learned that the best way to handle my problem is to only eat food I prepare. If I have to eat out, my go to foods are beef and chicken in the plainest form. For me personally, if I was dealing with other major health issues that had already damaged my body, I would not be overly concerned about my food allergies---unless I had a serious allergy to something specific that might cause a life threatening condition. Best wishes to you.

Extensive blood tests for my overall health and blood work for allergy testing on my back that was sent to a lab. The doctor is a allergy and immune specialist. He seems very smart and has spent more time with me than any other doctor in my life. I know lettuce sounds off but it has never agreed with me since I also have severe colon issues and I can't digest it properly.
The supplements are CoQ10, magnesium, L-Tyrosine iodine supplement for thyroid, D3-A & D, Omega 3 fish oil, zinc citrate and vitamin E with D-Alpha. We talked about B12 shots too.

My immune systems is shot.

I got a call back from Whole Foods today and they have a dietician on staff that I am meeting tomorrow at the store and she will walk me through the store and help me pick out from my do list of foods I can have. She seemed very helpful. WF also will cook your fish and some foods for you free of charge so I can pick them up. She seem to think the better food would help with the extensive fibro pain I suffer from. She also knew my doctors.

Hopefully we will find some foods I can eat and like.

I will add I was tested in my 20s for allergies and knew then that I was allergic to yeast, booze, malt, cheese, condiments and many others. I had just got married and for three months I did good but gave up because it was too difficult to eat and cook different meals. I gave up booze which was hard but gradually went back to regular food. My mistake.

Quinoa is not on your no list..... I went to an allergist and got food shots eating very little and ended up 105 pounds and very ill. Ended up finding out my body was not digesting food correctly so the items I was eating were not being digested and my body saw those large particles in my gut as invaders causing my body to attack it's self causing the allergy. Had the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidelberg_test done and it came back positive. Once I started using Betaine HCL to correct the problem, the allergies were gone (two weeks) and I could eat everything again.

What is it about fruits and vegetables that you don't like? Is it the texture or the flavor. There are many ways to prepare vegetables and you should be able to find palatable ways to eat them. Quinoa is an excellent source of protein and can be prepared in every way imaginable. It will take some work, but you should be able to find healthier ways of eating. Did this doctor have a nutritionist who can help you with the nuts and bolts of your new diet?

It's always a victory for me when I remember why I entered a room.

They have never been a favorite of mine. I have no appetite ever, so it's been easier to eat what I can get down and what I like. Since that is not an option anymore I will have to find easy foods to fix on the list. I have never heard of Quinoa, is that something I can eat for breakfast and is gluten free? It says it's a grain but I can't have wheat, rice, oats or sugar in cereals.

The doctors daughter works there also as a nutritionist and doctor but that's another 50.00 copay. I have already spent a bunch of money this month on copays and testing so I am looking for a cheaper route right now. The supplements alone are expensive. I will look at Quinoa tomorrow. Hopefully this girl at WF can find me some food to eat. Thanks.
