Neurologist is referring me to Pain Management

I had a stroke 5 yrs. ago (no symptoms)and recently the stress of 24/7 caretaker for my Parkinson's Husband reared me to seek medical treatment.

This neurologist did MRI and is referring me to pain management....Have you experienced Pain Management and what were your results?

Re: Neurologist is referring me to Pain Management

....I don't think anyone can answer your question, it's just too general. Pain Management is medical speciality, it's not a procedure. Your doctor is sending you for a Pain Management consultation. The pain specialist will examine you, take a detailed history and develop a medical plan. That plan could include a multitude of different things depending on your specific pain issues; infusions, injections, medications, physical therpay, accupuncture, massage, surgery etc etc.

I won't go into a lot of personal information here in order to respect a loved one's privacy, but I can tell you to go. Go and you will be glad you did.

If the neurologist reviewed your MRI then he/she believes you can benefit from pain management. I hope it helps you. Caretakers are the most compassionate people and you deserve to be taken care of after taking care of your DH for so long.

It is really challenging to care for Parkinsons and Alzheimers patients. You have to be an angel!

Re: Neurologist is referring me to Pain Management

I am seeing a Pain Management Specialist (anesthesiologist) as we speak.

I have severe back issues and I am receiving steroid spine injections, a set of three. I have another on 3/5. So far so good. Although the pain has not gone away, I do feel a lightening of the pain. I still get the horrible burning pains down my thighs (this is from 2 herniated discs), but the back pain has subsided to where I am only taking 2 hydro-codone a day. (I was up to 4).

I hope your appointment goes well, and you receive relief.

Sounds like a plan to me... if the neurologist recommended this... then go for it. After the pain management specialist instructs you concerning his/her recommendations, then you can decide if you are in agreement.

ETA: Perhaps pain mgmt specialists are best at administering the botox and perhaps you would have good results? I wish you well...

In certain cases, like patients who have Cerebral Palsy, Botox injections are use to severe muscle contractions. If Parkinson's is the cause of your dystonia (muscle contractions) then Botox might indeed help. But it's discussion you need to have an Orthopedics specialist.

Re: Neurologist is referring me to Pain Management

Why did you get the MRI? Do you have pain in a certain area? If you don't know all the details about your condition, you may need to see another neurologist. You should know all the answers to your questions before embarking on pain management. We don't have enough info to give you any feedback. Hope you resolve your problem! Caretakers are such angels!!!

Re: Neurologist is referring me to Pain Management

As I stated in my original post, I had stroke 5 yrs ago( with no lingering results)....I have been taking care of my DH who has Parkinson's disease 24/7 for almost a year now.

I have been in some pain, walking w/cane as my right foot feels like I am walking on HOT coals and is very painful....so is my Right arm which feels like I have it stuck in a vise most of the time. The neurologist who is very competent took a recent MRI and asked if I knew I had a "old" stroke which I stated I did know but what is causing my inability to walk and write...so he explained it and he is referring me to pain management. He said it was caused by stress....

My question is has anyone else had positive results from pain management.

Dear Angry Bird,

Sorry you having these stressful issues in your life.

I know of people who have had success with pain managment. If you are not pleased with the options it is not a lifetime commitment. You also have a voice and can express your opinions in your treatment. Embrace this as an opportunity to help right now as things always change.
