Does anyone take Fosamax for Osteopenia

Just had my 2nd bone density test and results were Osteopenia. Doc wants to put me on Fosamax. As with any other drug out there the side effects are scary, just wondering if anyone is on this with no side effects??

You may want to do some research for taking this supplement. I think there was a thread going around about Fosamax. You can also Google for more information. I did take it for several years - faithfully every Sunday morning and stopped because it was very hard to digest.

Re: Does anyone take Fosamax for Osteopenia

My Dr. prescribed it a couple of months ago. I haven't noticed any problems, yet. It seemed to me that if I wanted my bones to stop the deterioration process that I didn't have much choice. The main thing that helped me decide to go ahead and take it is that my Dr. said that it will rebuild my bone strength and that I could go off of it after a year or so. He will do another density at that time and we shall see if the medication has done what promised.

I have been on fosamax for several years, and have not had any side effects. I will have a bone scan in 2015 and hopefully I can go off the script. I think 10 years is the limit and I am close to that.

I took it for 5 years. I don't recall having any s/e's from it.

My mother took if for several years, and she lost a lot of jaw bone as a side effect. It caused her to lose several implants that she had.

Re: Does anyone take Fosamax for Osteopenia

My doctor says there are better options out there, she does not recommend Fosamax. I have had osteopenia for years, I rely on only Calcium Vit D, magnesium. After all these years, I am still a ways off from osteoporosis. My friends who take RX have osteoporosis, not osteopenia.

Re: Does anyone take Fosamax for Osteopenia

Hi Shel, thanks for your response. I am one number away from osteoporosis. The loss of jaw bone was the first thing I read and it scared me. Just had the post for an implant put in. I do know that the chances of side effects are small but I really dont want to risk it.

Really do your homework and read up on how this drug works. It only appears to make your bones denser by preventing dead bone cells from falling away. It does not solve the problem and it does not make bones stronger. Many on this type of drug for several years end up with bone shear breaks. No easy answers but there are many things YOU can do to improve bone health. Suggest you check out www.betterbones.com
