~~Has Anyone Been Diagnosed With Mitral Valve Regurgitation?~~

I was just diagnosed and have an appointment tomorrow with a cardiologist. I'm really nervous and am wondering if anyone here has had any experience with it and can relay my anxiety at all? TIA

Please read what the Mayo Clinic has to say. Don't take advice from people on a Bulletin Board. It can only scare you. There are too many people here who are only too happy to tell you about their experiences, which absolutely has nothing to do with yours.

Good luck with the Cardiologist. I hope he allays your fears. Smile

Hi twopeas,

While I have had 2 heart attacks and have a slightly leaking heart valve I have never been diagnosed with Mitral Valve Regurgitation. I do have a hockey player friend that was diagnosed with this several years ago. The treatment for him that he decided on was Mitral Valve Repair.

He was only in his 40's and wanted to continue playing hockey so he decided on the surgery instead of trying the ACE Inhibitor or Beta Blocker route, which were other medication choices his Cardiologist Specialist gave to him. He was seeing the same Cardiologists Practice that I have been seeing since the 1980's.

He had the surgery done and exactly 1 year later he was back to playing hockey once again. I think he still had to take some prescription meds but they were more for backup reason that being the only source of treating his Regurgitation problem.

What procedure did they use to diagnose this issue? I know some they can see in an X-ray, but they usually want to go to an Echo-cardiogram or an Electrocardiogram. Seems like I remember him saying that way they can tell the extent of the problem. He said there are different types of this with some being more severe than others and that for some the options might not be as many as there were for him.

That is about all I can tell you about this heart issue. Make sure you make notes or audio record what the Cardiologist says to you or make sure someone comes with you so you completely understand what the doctor is saying. I am sure if you didn't have any of the above tests other than than an X-ray, the Cardiologist will probably order another test or 2 to see if that is actually your problem.

My best to you and do please let me know about this will you? As I said in my other post to you, "I care".

Just to let you know that I am not giving her advice. She asked a question and I am telling her what I know from my cardio issues and that of a good friend of mine that was seeing the same Cardiologist Practice as was/am I. Nothing I said in my reply was meant to scare her and none of it was meant to be taken as "advice". When it comes to important issues of heath you will never see me here or anywhere on this or any other forum give advice to anyone.

My usual comment is "see your doctor" and since she has saw her GP and asked about this?

Thank you, John. I had my second echocardiogram yesterday. It was about a half hour long. So, tomorrow I meet w/ the cardiologist to see how severe (or not) that it is. I appreciate your response. Regards, Pat.

Thank you, Sophia. I have been reading up on the condition for weeks. I was first made aware about 18 months ago and then had the second echocardiogram yesterday. I asked for personal experiences from the readers ~ not medical advice because we all know better. Wink

Sorry - I guess I am confused???? Your first post says you were "just diagnosed". Now, you are saying you were made aware about l8 months ago, so I thought your first post was accurate.

Sorry for the confusion. A year and a half ago I had my first echocardiogram. I did not see the cardiologist at that time. My GP received the results and gave me a rather sketchy review of the report and I became aware that there may be an issue and I began researching. The second echo was yesterday and that was when I learned a diagnosis. More in concrete, if you will. Tomorrow I am hoping that all of my questions/concerns can be answered. I have lost two younger brothers with heart issues and I am more than a little bit worried.

Re: ~~Has Anyone Been Diagnosed With Mitral Valve Regurgitation?~~

The key in this situation is that you are under a physician's care, and he will guide you through this. I suggest having a family member with you when you see your physicians; not only for the support, but to have another set of ears hearing all the information you will be given. Sending good thoughts and prayers of strength to help you through the days ahead.
